Case Exposes Reality Of Workers Who Turn To Extreme Measures In The Face Of Rising Prices And Lack Of Affordable Housing

A woman went viral on social media for living in the bathroom of her workplace. According to reports, she made the unusual decision to escape the high cost of rent in the city where she lives.

A 19-year-old Chinese girl drew attention on social media by showing that she lives inside a bathroom at her workplace. The reason is simple: to save money.

For just 50 yuan (about US$ 7), she found a way to live without spending on rent in a city where prices are too high for her reality.

Bathroom Turned Home

The young woman works at a furniture factory in Hunan, China. Unable to afford the rents in the area, which range from 800 to 1,000 yuan (US$ 110 to US$ 140), she decided to live in an abandoned bathroom at the factory.

According to her, it was the only way to save money for what she really desires: to make a down payment on a house in the future.

She mentioned that she asked her boss if she could stay there, and he agreed. Since then, she has been living there. She even wanted to pay for it. “She insisted on giving me 50 yuan a month to cover water and electricity, but I didn’t want to accept,” said the young woman’s boss.

He also explained that the factory is located in an industrial park far from the city, where there are few housing options nearby.

Privacy Is More Valuable Than Comfort

The boss tried to help by seeking nearby housing alternatives. He even offered her a space in the company office. But she refused. She preferred the bathroom.

She said that, despite the discomfort, it gives her more privacy. With a salary of less than 3,000 yuan (about US$ 415), she claims she needs to save as much as possible. “Having a place to live is enough for now. I can’t afford 800 yuan to rent a house,” she wrote in a post.

Viral Story And Divided Reactions

The young woman shared photos and videos of the small space where she sleeps. The content went viral. Many social media users doubted the truth of her story, accusing her of doing this just to get attention.

But her own boss confirmed the facts on social media, emphasizing that the young woman has indeed been living there for about a month.

After the media coverage, she shared that she left school at 16 to help with her family finances. This makes it even more important for her to keep her job and save what she can. Her boss is renovating one of the factory’s offices, and she hopes to move there soon.
