A Woman Was Arrested After Using a Flaw in a Fuel Pump Software to Get US$ 27,000 in Free Gasoline, Revealing an Unusual Case of Technological Fraud.

A 45-year-old woman was arrested for stealing gasoline worth over 27 thousand dollars, using a software flaw in fuel pumps. The arrest occurred after a detailed investigation revealed how the criminal exploited the vulnerability in the fuel supply system at a gas station in Lincoln, in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

System Flaw Allowed for Free Gasoline Refueling

The case began when the police received a report from the loss prevention manager of Bosselman Enterprise, responsible for the Pump and Pantry fuel station. On October 20, 2023, the manager reported that a fraud scheme involving free fuel was occurring.

A deeper investigation revealed that, in November 2022, the fuel pump received a software update that, when implemented, aimed to manage orders and reward cards.

The update was requested by customers and employees of the station, but a flaw in the system allowed anyone using a rewards card in a specific way to put the pump into a “demo mode“, causing the fuel to be released for free.

Card Tracking Leads to Thompson’s Arrest

The police discovered that the rewards card used to trigger the fraud was repeatedly used to illegally refuel vehicles. Through a thorough investigation, agents were able to track the use of the card and identify Dawn Thompson as responsible for the frauds.

Security camera footage confirmed Thompson’s presence at the fuel station on several occasions, refueling her vehicle with large amounts of gasoline. Authorities estimate that between November 13, 2022, and June 1, 2023, she stole approximately 7,413.59 gallons of fuel, totaling a loss of US$ 27,860.27 for the gas station.

Fuel Scheme Involved Multiple People

In addition to Thompson, the police also identified another woman who used the rewards card to obtain gasoline at reduced prices. The woman stated that she paid Thompson US$ 500 in exchange for gasoline worth US$ 700, on at least 10 occasions.

This second person also claimed that Thompson sold the card in June 2023, at which point the fraud system was finally corrected.

The investigation revealed that Thompson had received the card as payment for a debt from a man who could not be located, as he passed away in January 2024.

After months of investigation, Thompson was arrested on March 6, 2024. She was formally charged with theft and fraud, with bail set at 10% of US$ 7,500.

Todo **** tem q ser punido exemplarmente. A multa deveria ser o dobro do valor roubado por ela.
