Mobilization Brought Cement, Bricks, and Masons, but Items Like Wood and Ceramics Were Still Needed to Complete the House
The story of Abigail Carvalho gained new chapters in Teresina in 2020. After trying to build her own house with her own hands to live with her daughter, she began receiving donations of materials and also labor to raise the property.
The objective remained the same during that period: to ensure a roof to live with Nicole, who is 2 years old, with more safety and space. The construction was in the Angelim neighborhood, in the south zone of Teresina.
What Happened and Why It Attracted Attention
The attempt to raise the house alone moved dozens of people. From that point on, donations began to arrive and offers of help to speed up the work.

Argentina patrols the South Atlantic with ships built in France and monitors over 1.1 million km² with 87 m OPVs, a range of 7,500 miles, 360° radar, and a 30 mm cannon against illegal fishing in the 200-mile zone.
The mobilization included construction materials and the support of professionals willing to get the house built. This reduced the physical burden of work that she had been facing alone.
What Abigail’s Routine Was Like at That Moment
In early 2020, Abigail worked as a nanny. With the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, she was laid off from work and began living on half of the minimum wage and the benefit of Bolsa Família.
She lived with her daughter at her siblings’ house and described the lack of space in her daily life. She said that the two slept in the living room because there was not enough room.
Why Having a Home of One’s Own Became a Priority
Abigail reported that she lived with the child’s father, but he left her when she was three months pregnant. As they lived on rent, she could not maintain the costs and went to live with her siblings.
Building the house represented the chance to restart with stability. The plan was to raise a simple and functional home, with the basics to live with her daughter.
The Land and the Effort to Keep Up with Payments
In 2018, Abigail managed to buy a plot of land with her sister-in-law’s help. Since then, she struggled to pay the installments and save money to buy materials.
This effort continued even with tight income. The donations began to alleviate part of this journey, especially in the initial stages of the work.
What Materials She Already Had and What Was Still Missing
She stated that she had already secured cement and bricks enough for the construction. She also reported that she received a donation of 500 bricks and still needed to pick up this material.
Even with this progress, there were still items pending to continue the work. She pointed out the lack of materials like wood and ceramics, necessary to complete important stages.
What Changed with the Arrival of the Masons
Abigail tried to build the residence alone for some time. Then, masons approached her and decided to build the house for her.
She stopped her individual attempt after receiving alerts about the risks of lack of experience and the structure collapsing. With the offered help, the work gained more security and increased the chance of the house being completed.
The mobilization around Abigail Carvalho transformed, in 2020, a solitary work into a collective effort in the Angelim neighborhood, in the south zone of Teresina. Donations of cement, bricks, and the arrival of masons paved the way for the construction to progress.
Even so, the house still depended on materials like wood and ceramics to continue until the end. The focus at that moment remained on ensuring a simple, yet dignified home to live with Nicole, who is 2 years old, with more space and safety.
