The Modernization of Radars in São Paulo Will Revolutionize Traffic, Allowing to Catch Even Cell Phone Use While Driving. The Expectation Is That Fines Will Increase Significantly by the End of 2024.
You might think you’re free from fines on the streets of São Paulo, but that is about to change drastically.
The city, known for its heavy traffic, has just received a new generation of intelligent radars that promises to catch even infractions that previously went unnoticed.
The detail that few drivers are aware of? These radars can accurately catch cell phone use while driving like never before! And this is just the beginning of the changes.

According to the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) of São Paulo, 87% of the 877 radars are already being updated as part of an ambitious project to modernize the traffic enforcement system.
The forecast is that by the end of 2024, all devices will be replaced by new models, equipped with cutting-edge technology that will increase the accuracy of fines and the range of detected infractions.
Mass Modernization and New Types of Infractions
The feeling that the number of fines has decreased in recent months may be a temporary relief for drivers.
According to the CET, many radars were turned off temporarily during the update process, but this pause will not last long.
In the coming months, the scenario will change radically, and penalties are expected to spike as new devices come into full operation.
As reported by CET, this modernization is not just a simple swap of devices.
The project involves the installation of 661 new radars at strategic points throughout the city, which represents a significant leap from older models.
The technological innovation includes surface sensors, Doppler radars, and advanced optical systems, capable of measuring vehicle speeds with extreme accuracy.
These new devices, installed according to the strict standards of Ordinance Inmetro 158/2022, guarantee automated enforcement and are capable of recording infractions with impressive details.
Encrypted photographs include date, time, measured speed, and the speed limit, all to prevent any disputes by drivers.
Cell Phone Use While Driving Will Be Caught
But it doesn’t stop there. The new radars also bring an unprecedented feature: the ability to catch infractions that were not previously detected so efficiently.
Cell phone use while driving, for instance, which is a common practice, will be monitored automatically and accurately.
Additionally, the new devices continue to register traditional infractions, such as speeding, running red lights, and ignoring vehicle rotation restrictions.
This new feature may surprise many drivers, especially those who have become accustomed to not being penalized for minor infractions that happen daily in São Paulo traffic.
But the advanced technology of São Paulo’s radars promises to change this reality, making the streets more monitored and safer.
Fines Are Expected to Spike by the End of the Year
With the new devices in full operation, the expectation is that the number of fines will increase considerably in the coming months.
According to CET data, in 2023, 8 million fines were issued, a number lower than the record of 9.6 million recorded in 2022.
However, in 2024, the number of infractions recorded so far is only 2.2 million, a value well below expectations.
This, however, should change with the completion of modernization, when numbers are expected to grow exponentially.
Therefore, from now on, drivers need to be even more attentive to infractions that may have previously gone unnoticed.
Enforcement will be relentless, and the use of more sophisticated technologies will ensure that no infraction escapes the radars.
This modernization of the radars in São Paulo is not just a matter of replacing old equipment with new.
It is a revolution in the way traffic will be enforced.
With cutting-edge technology and greater accuracy, drivers will have to double their attention, not only to avoid traditional fines but also to avoid getting caught committing infractions that were not previously so easily detected.
And what about you, do you think these new radars will improve traffic safety or just increase the number of fines applied in the city?
