“The sea also belongs to them” was inspired by research commissioned to the Ipsos Institute with women who work offshore in various companies in the sector.

“The study provided a diagnosis of what they think, and the results were so rich that we found it important to give visibility and share the information with the entire industry to create a collective movement to contribute to the assurance of psychological safety and equity of opportunities, as well as to promote the attraction and selection of new female talents in this area of operation,” contextualizes Nir Lander, Vice-President of People and Management at Ocyan – “We realized that it would be necessary to move forward in a joint movement and join forces if we wanted to go further; therefore, this campaign is permanently open to new companies interested in participating in this cause,” he adds.
34% of the Interviewed Women Said That Working Offshore Can Inspire Other Women to Pursue This Type of Activity
The research referred to by the executive brings important data; 90% of the women surveyed deemed it essential to create campaigns and actions to communicate the relevance of the gender equality issue; 87% asked for the creation of incentive programs for the hiring of women in the sector, and at least 34% said that by working offshore, they can inspire other women to pursue this type of activity. It was based on numbers like these that an exclusive website on the subject was created, focusing on three main areas: content, opportunities, and inspiration – it will be a meeting point, a place to seek information, job positions, and share stories.
IBP currently has a Diversity Commission that holds periodic meetings to discuss and promote initiatives on the topic, such as this one.
“This initiative aims to foster debate and shed light on equality of opportunities in the offshore environment. The presence of women in operational roles is important for career advancement within companies. We hope that the portal will be a space to share stories and inspire actions that lead to changes in the O&G sector,” comments Cristina Pinho, Corporate Executive Director of IBP.
The Norwegian Equinor States That Stimulating Diversity in the Oil and Gas Sector Is Essential
For Ana Serrano, Senior Vice-President of Subsurface in Oil Technology & Exploration at Equinor, stimulating diversity in the oil and gas sector is essential.
“At Equinor, we believe that diversity fosters innovation and creativity, two elements we consider vital to shaping the future of energy. Therefore, we have been working to attract and motivate more women for leadership positions in the company and to increase the number of female employees offshore. I am sure that ‘The Sea Also Belongs to Them’ will play a very important role in this journey toward gender equity,” comments the executive.
Other Oil Companies Like TotalEnergies and Altera&Ocyan Also Embrace the Cause of Women Offshore
“This initiative aligns very well with TotalEnergies’ guidelines to promote the diversity of our talents as a crucial factor for our competitiveness, our innovation capacity, and our attractiveness. Respect for others is one of our fundamental values. Cultivating an inclusive work environment, respecting individual differences and leveraging this diversity to enhance performance and innovation, are principles that guide us daily,” reiterates Eduarda Pina, Business, Development, and Geoscience Director of the company.
“Our commitment to gender equity is ingrained throughout the human resources process and is part of our culture. We want to attract and especially provide career development opportunities for these female talents. Today, in the joint venture Altera&Ocyan, we have 18% female representation out of a total workforce of just over 300 members. We have a way to go, and this sector movement only reinforces our responsibility toward this cause,” endorses Carolina Almeida, People Manager at Altera&Ocyan.
The Oil and Gas Multinationals Subsea 7 and Schlumberger Highlight the Importance of Female Representation
“Being a partner in the campaign – The Sea Also Belongs to Them – is a great honor for Subsea 7. We have been investing in increasing the number of women in offshore roles so that we can have increasingly diverse perspectives and collaboration at different levels. Women are increasingly conquering oceans of opportunities, bringing their broad view, their voice, and their actions to transform the labor market, and Subsea 7 hopes to actively contribute to promoting this valuable platform,” celebrates Alessandra Nogueira, HR Director of Subsea 7.
Anna Paula Lougon, Technology Director of Brazil at Schlumberger, highlights the importance of female representation.
“The advancement of women’s representation in the oil and gas sector is noticeable, but we still need to increase their inclusion in this market. Representation is fundamental to addressing all the challenges the industry will face,” emphasizes the executive.
Aker Solutions and SBM Offshore in Brazil Point Out That the Initiative Has a Very Rich and Necessary Objective
Jaqueline Fonseca, HR Director of SBM Offshore in Brazil, points out that the initiative has a very rich and necessary goal, which is to facilitate women’s connection with opportunities in major companies in the market.
“Seeing women gaining ground in a historically and still predominantly male environment is a great source of pride for me as a professional, but also as a woman working in the energy, oil, and gas industry. We have much to learn, barriers that we need to break, and taboos that we will have to shatter, but no inclusion process is different. It requires strength, and strength is something that no woman lacks! Therefore, we at SBM Offshore are committed to embracing the cause and dedicating our energy to inclusion and diversity,” she emphasizes.
Aker Solutions is another company that has joined the campaign. “This task force is a necessary initiative and aligns with our strategic objectives to continue building a more diverse and inclusive company, promoting opportunities for the integration of women into the energy market,” emphasizes Andreia Maciel, VP of Human Resources at Aker Solutions.
