Volkswagen Trucks and Buses Reaps the Benefits of Its Billion-Dollar Investment and Grows Amidst Global Crisis, Securing Contracts to Export Vehicles Manufactured in RJ to Asia

In contrast to Ford, which has ceased vehicle production and closed factories in Brazil, Volkswagen is entering the Asian market and has surpassed five thousand employees in its industrial complex, with one thousand hires since the onset of the pandemic. The expansion of the workforce is part of the growth strategy involving investments of R$ 2 billion until 2025. The multinational’s resources are allocated to internationalization and the development of more sustainable VW Trucks and Buses.

Volkswagen Trucks and Buses will close the year with five thousand workers operating in its factory, along with its partners in the Modular Consortium. Of this total, one thousand professionals were hired since the beginning of the pandemic, representing a growth of over 25% in its workforce.

VW Trucks and Buses Factory Resumes Full Operations to Meet Customer Demand in 2022

VW Trucks and Buses factory resumes operations with a full second production shift to meet customer demand in 2022. The goal is also to ensure the sustainability of the market share gains that the company has recorded in recent months, currently accounting for about 30% of new truck registrations and approximately 27% in buses in Brazil.

“We started our operations in Resende 25 years ago with just one hundred employees. Today we have surpassed five thousand professionals, who go far beyond the production of Volkswagen trucks and buses circulating in over 30 countries around the world. We have built our global research and development center for new technologies here, which is a global reference. Our factory houses the largest e-mobility hub in Latin America, and we continue to expand our business,” emphasizes Roberto Cortes, president and CEO of Volkswagen Trucks and Buses. VWCO and the companies in the Modular Consortium have just completed the last wave of hiring for 2021. Over the year, 550 new positions were filled. The opportunities, as Cortes explains, were not limited to production. The automaker will invest R$ 2 billion until 2025, and part of these resources is already stimulating its operations abroad. Internationalization gains momentum with VW and Delivery.

For the First Time in Its History, Volkswagen Will Sell Its Vehicles in Asia

The VW e-Delivery, a groundbreaking 100% electric truck developed and produced in Latin America, is beginning its testing phase in other countries on the continent. Starting in the first quarter of 2022, the automaker is launching a program in partnership with importers to prepare for its commercial arrival around the region.

All units are exported from the factory in Resende, Rio de Janeiro. VWCO makes its debut in Asia with local assembly. Volkswagen Trucks and Buses is not only aiming to expand its portfolio in markets already occupied by the brand.

For the first time in its history, the company will sell its vehicles in Asia, with the Philippines as its entry point, through a partnership with a local importer, MACC, which will also be responsible for the assembly of VW buses in the country. The trucks will continue to be exported from the factory in Brazil.

In total, ten models will be offered to the Filipino market, from the Delivery and Constellation families for trucks and Volksbus for buses, with custom configurations for national application by the Engineering of Volkswagen Trucks and Buses, within the tailored concept. The first 40 units are already sold and will have eight service points across the country.

VWO Unveils the Delivery Express+, Vehicle Gains More Power, Up to 5% Fuel Savings, and Complies with the Emissions Standard That Took Effect in Brazil, the Proconve P-8

Ready for the future of the Brazilian market, the new technologies from VWCO go far beyond electrics and connectivity. With recent hires, the company is also preparing to comply with the upcoming emissions standard that will take effect in Brazil, the Proconve P-8. The first vehicle to debut in the brand’s portfolio under this legislation will be the Delivery Express+, which falls within the light commercial category, for which the rule applies starting next January.

The advantages, however, go beyond the environmental focus: the vehicle has gained more power and an exclusive calibration in its engine. Its developments and technical improvements can result in a fuel savings of up to 5%, developed by the engineering department of the automaker for the engine production by FPT. “It is our mission at Volkswagen Trucks and Buses to continually deliver more efficient products, from both an environmental and financial perspective. Our latest launches support this strategy, and we are now taking another step in this direction. Whether in diesel or electric models, under any emissions standard, we will always have the most efficient option with the best total cost of operation,” emphasizes Roberto Cortes, president and CEO of Volkswagen Trucks and Buses.

The Giants Volkswagen and Bosch Create a Company for the Manufacturing and Production of Electric Vehicle Battery Cells, and Europe Has a Unique Opportunity to Become a Global Battery Power in Coming Years

The Volkswagen Group and the Robert Bosch Group signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday, January 18, 2022, to explore the possibilities of large-scale battery manufacturing solutions in Europe. The corresponding memorandum of understanding was signed yesterday by Thomas Schmall, member of the Volkswagen Group Management Board responsible for Technology and CEO of Volkswagen Group Components, and Rolf Najork, member of the Board of Management of the Robert Bosch Group and President of the Executive Board of Bosch Rexroth.

The companies aim to provide the full range of processes and components necessary for large-scale battery cell and system manufacturing. The demand throughout the industry is enormous: only in Europe, several companies plan to build cell factories with a total annual capacity of around 700 gigawatt-hours by 2030.

For both partners, this alliance is another step towards taking leadership roles in the world of electric mobility. The partnership will be based on complementary areas of expertise: while Volkswagen is a mass automotive manufacturer on its way to becoming a major battery cell manufacturer, Bosch has excellent know-how in factory automation and systems integration.

Europe Has a Unique Opportunity to Become a Global Battery Power in Coming Years

Thomas Schmall commented: “Europe has a unique opportunity to become a global battery power in the coming years. There is a strong and growing demand for all aspects of battery production, including equipment for new gigafactories. Volkswagen and Bosch will explore opportunities to develop and shape this new multibillion-dollar industry in Europe. Our decision to actively engage in the vertical integration of the battery manufacturing value chain will explore new pools of considerable profits. Establishing a European supply chain, fully localized for electric mobility manufactured in Europe, certainly marks a rare opportunity in business history.”

Rolf Najork stated: “Together with Volkswagen, we seek a path to industrialize battery cell production processes with standardized equipment. We have the best prerequisites for this: Bosch is not only the largest automotive supplier in the world, but also one of the leading suppliers of factory equipment. We understand how battery technology works and know how to manufacture it. With over 135 years of automotive experience and our proven expertise in industrialization, we want to meet the growing demand for batteries. The European industry has the potential to become a technological driver for the ecological transformation of the economy.”

Volkswagen and Bosch formed the project unit with the goal of preparing for the establishment of the new company by the end of 2022.
