Unusual object draws attention on social media
The image shows a rounded object with structures resembling purple tentacles.

The astronaut himself clarified that the object is just a potato, which he nicknamed “Spudnik-1”.
He chose the name as a direct reference to Sputnik-1, the first artificial satellite launched in 1957.
Technical explanation reveals origin of the “tentacles”
Pettit explained the elements present in the image when commenting on the post.
The so-called “purple tentacles” represent natural potato sprouts that emerged during its development.
The visible white part on the surface corresponds to velcro, which he used to keep the food secured in the microgravity environment.
This resource prevents the object from floating uncontrollably inside the space station.

The astronaut took potatoes during Expedition 72, conducted from September 2024 to April 2025.
He carried out the cultivation during leisure moments, which he defined as his “space hour”; he set up an improvised terrarium with artificial light, adapted to the conditions of the orbital environment.
