NATO plans to reduce carbon emissions and is considering investing in solar panels as a source of energy

As the world moves to lower CO2 emissions, NATO, an alliance military most powerful in the world, sees investment in clean energy as fundamental. Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO, made a recent call for countries to start working together to get heavy battle tanks or fighters and warships to have solar panels on their weapons of war.

The Secretary General's speech took place at the New Ideas for NATO 2030. He pointed out that the military of NATO member countries must commit themselves to curb emissions of CO2"NATO must work to see how we can reduce emissions from military operations".

NATO seeks to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to the environment

He highlighted that weapons of war such as ships, war tanks and fighter jets consume a lot of fossil fuel, being large emitters of CO2: "We are all aware that tanks, fighter jets and warships consume a lot of fossil fuel. So we have to study how we can reduce these emissions by alternative fuels, solar panels, other ways of executing our missions.. "

Is spending on weapons of war really a concern?

A report produced by SGR on the carbon footprint (carbon footprint) revealed that, in 2019, around 24,8 tonnes of 'tCO2e' were emitted by the European Union's military power. This equates to around 14 million average cars. At the same time, another study from the same year shows that the United States Armed Forces alone pollute more than the Armed Forces of 140 countries combined. To give you an idea, an American war tank pollutes the equivalent of 10 cars common.

Would solar panels have the capacity to move weapons of such heavy wars?

According to website data Interesting Engineering, moving a war tank with solar panels with current technology would be impractical. Today, the technology of solar panels on vehicles is still in its infancy, making its application in weapons of war that need a lot of strength even more difficult. However, it could be used to give more power to tanks and decrease dependency and increase fuel efficiency.
