Pioneering Project in the Naval Sector, Result of the Partnership Between Ecovix and Ocyan, Promises a Milestone for the Local Economy
The Rio Grande Shipyard, in an ambitious project belonging to Ecovix, began last Tuesday (6) its largest repair service since the resumption of naval activities in 2021. Highlighted in the naval scene, the shipyard received the drillship ODN I, owned by Ocyan, about to undergo its first dry dock for a comprehensive review of systems, painting, maintenance, and piping services.
Rio Grande Shipyard: Focus on Review and Maintenance of Vessels
This vessel, which will be put into operation under a contract signed by Petrobras, boasts the capability to operate in water depths of up to 3,048 meters, with the ability to drill wells reaching depths of up to 12,195 meters. These detailed repairs, expected to last around 60 days, are projected to generate approximately 700 jobs, reinforcing the position of the Rio Grande Shipyard as a catalyst for the local economy.
“We have been preparing for more than three months for this task, considering that the ODN I has never been in dry dock before. The cradle plan (the bed receiving the ship for docking) was prepared in a unique way,” says Ricardo Ávila, operational director of Ecovix. The services are being carried out in partnership with DockBrasil, which has been actively collaborating since 2021 on the shipyard’s repairs.

The Promising Recovery of the Naval Cluster
As it gains ground in the vessel repair sector, the Rio Grande Shipyard is also attentive to possible twists in the sector, especially the expectations of investments in the city’s Naval Cluster. On the last 29th, Ecovix received the visit of the presidents of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, and Transpetro, Sérgio Bacci, in meetings held in Rio Grande, RS.
In these meetings, strategies were outlined to revive the hiring of vessels in shipyards in the south of the state. Ricardo Ávila emphasizes that “both were categorical in stating that it must be done responsibly, so that there is not, once again, a cycle of remobilization of the naval industry and, in some time, a demobilization.”
Ávila, operational director of Ecovix, highlights that the company is keeping an eye on market opportunities and has extensive expertise for various activities in the sector. “We have highly qualified professionals capable of meeting complex demands and contributing to generating new jobs and promoting development for Rio Grande and the entire region,” he concludes.
