Sustainable Initiative of the Neoenergia Luzia Solar Park Reuses Materials and Reinforces Commitment to the Circular Economy, Promoting Positive Environmental Impacts and Innovation in the Brazilian Energy Sector.

Neoenergia announced a significant advancement in its environmental agenda: the recycling of more than 34 tons of photovoltaic modules used in the installation of the Neoenergia Luzia solar park, located in the interior of Paraíba.

The sustainable action avoided the emission of about 26 tons of CO₂, equivalent to the average absorption of approximately 1,450 trees throughout their lives. In addition, 98m³ of landfill waste was saved — the volume corresponding to 98 water tanks of one thousand liters each.

Neoenergia’s Commitment to the Circular Economy in the Energy Sector

The initiative follows the principles of the circular economy, promoting the reuse of resources and the reduction of industrial waste.

Nearly 82% of the components of the solar panels were recycled, including valuable raw materials such as aluminum and glass, which returned to the production chain of their respective sectors.

Daniel Daibert, Superintendent of Environment and Land at Neoenergia, highlights that investment by companies in recycling and the reuse of materials significantly contributes to minimizing the environmental impacts of their activities.

Furthermore, this practice drives the creation of a more efficient production model committed to responsibility in the energy sector.

Structured Recycling Process and Strategic Partnership

The recycling of the modules at the Paraíba solar park was carried out in four well-defined stages: collection, transportation, processing, and final disposal of the materials.

The project received support from the specialized company SunR, a reference in the reconditioning of photovoltaic systems and plants.

The aim was not only to minimize the environmental impacts of the project but also to develop a solution that added value to Neoenergia’s production process and served as a reference for the entire national energy sector.

Neoenergia Luzia: A Milestone in Centralized Solar Generation

Inaugurated in March 2023, the Neoenergia Luzia solar park is the company’s first facility exclusively dedicated to centralized photovoltaic generation.

With an installed capacity of 149.3 MWp, the park is capable of supplying enough energy to power more than 100,000 homes, operating in the Free Contracting Environment (ACL).

The strategic choice of location in Paraíba aims to optimize the synergy between the company’s operational assets.

The project is part of the Neoenergia Renewable Complex, which combines wind and solar sources in the Neoenergia Chafariz and Neoenergia Luzia parks.

Both are connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN) through the Neoenergia Santa Luzia II substation and its transmission line.

This action is even more relevant in light of projections from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which estimates the disposal of more than 78 million tons of photovoltaic modules by 2050.

This reality has encouraged [our] employees to create a solution, making the production process even more sustainable and generating value for the entire sector and for society,” concluded Daibert.

With actions like this, Neoenergia contributes to the energy transition in Brazil, demonstrating that investment in sustainable practices in the energy sector can result in tangible benefits for the environment and improve the economic efficiency of projects.
