In Santa Catarina, municipalities like Urupema, São Joaquim, and Urubici woke up with temperatures below zero and reports of snow. On Morro de Urupema, thermometers registered -1.29°C around 6 a.m., while in Urubici, the minimum was -0.07°C at 4 a.m., and in São Joaquim, 0.26°C. In Rio Grande do Sul, cities like São José dos Ausentes, Bom Jesus, and Cambará do Sul also witnessed the phenomenon, according to MetSul Meteorology.

Atmospheric Conditions Favorable for Snow Formation

The combination of an intense polar air mass with the moisture brought by an extratropical cyclone off the southern coast created the ideal conditions for the formation of ice crystals in the clouds, resulting in the precipitation of snow. According to Climatempo, this interaction between cold air and moisture was decisive for the phenomenon.

Meteorological Forecasts Confirmed with Accuracy

Meteorologists had warned, since the previous week, about the possibility of snow in the South of Brazil due to the arrival of a strong polar air mass. The projections indicated that the highest chance of occurrence would be between the late afternoon of Wednesday, the 28th, and the morning of Thursday, the 29th. The forecasts were realized, surprising residents and tourists in the affected areas.

Impact on Affected Regions and Precautionary Measures

The snow thus transformed the landscape of the mountain cities and, in addition, attracted numerous visitors, demanding immediate attention from local authorities. In Serra do Rio do Rastro, Santa Catarina, the intense snowstorm consequently caused the temporary closure of the road for safety reasons. However, the location was reopened around 10:30 a.m. and has since remained under constant monitoring to avoid new risks.
