New Floating Production, Storage and Transfer (FPSO) Began Operating More Than Two Months Ahead of Schedule, Increasing Field Capacity by 31%.
The FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão began its operations this Saturday (05/24) in the Mero field, located in the Libra block of the Santos Basin. The departure of the unit, more than two months ahead of the business plan, represents a significant advance for production in the Brazilian pre-salt and is a milestone in the development of the field.
New FPSO Platform Enters Early Operation in the Santos Basin
The FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão began operating in the Mero field, in the Libra block. This event took place in the Santos Basin. Notably, the start of operations occurred more than two months ahead of the original schedule. This FPSO is the fifth platform to operate in the Mero field.
The Impact of the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão on Mero
According to information released by Agência Petrobras, the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão has a robust capacity. The unit can produce 180,000 barrels of oil per day. Additionally, it has the capacity to compress and reinject 12 million cubic meters of gas daily. With the entry of this new FPSO into operation, the installed production capacity in the Mero field will increase to 770,000 barrels per day. This represents a 31% increase. The platform was chartered by Petrobras, the operator of the consortium, from SBM Offshore for a period of 22.5 years.

Technology and Infrastructure of the New FPSO
Twelve wells will be connected to the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão. This interconnection will be made through a robust subsea infrastructure. Of this total, five wells are oil producers. Six are water or gas injectors alternately. There is also one convertible well, which will initially operate as an oil producer and later as a gas injector. To optimize production and reduce risks, the wells of this FPSO are equipped with smart completion technology. This feature allows production and injection to occur at previously selected intervals, which can be altered remotely from the platform. Moreover, the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão is equipped with features to operate the HISEP (High Pressure Separator) in the future. This technology, patented by Petrobras and currently under qualification, allows for subsea separation between the extracted oil and associated gas rich in CO₂, which is reinjected directly into the reservoir.
A Strategic Field with Multiple Production Systems
The FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão is the fifth production unit in the Mero field. It joins the FPSOs Pioneiro de Libra, Guanabara, Sepetiba, and Marechal Duque de Caxias. “Since 2022, every year we have begun the operation of a large production system in the Mero field. This demonstrates the capability of our teams, as well as the relevance and quality of this asset in the global scenario,” says Sylvia Anjos, director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras. Renata Baruzzi, director of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation at Petrobras, added: “The entry into operation of another FPSO is strategic and represents the company’s effort to anticipate the delivery of new production systems, sustainably and innovatively, contributing decisively to Petrobras’ results.”
The operations of the unitized Mero field are conducted by a consortium. Petrobras is the operator, with a 38.6% stake. The partners include Shell Brasil (19.3%), TotalEnergies (19.3%), CNPC (9.65%), and CNOOC (9.65%). Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A (PPSA), with 3.5%, acts as the contract manager and representative of the Union in the uncontracted area.
