Trajectory of the Hyundai Elantra in Brazil
The Hyundai Elantra is a mid-size sedan produced by Hyundai Motor Company since 1990. In Brazil, the Elantra has marked its presence with several generations, offering consumers a robust and well-equipped option in the mid-size sedan segment. The model succeeded the Hyundai Stellar and, in its fifth generation launched in 2010, adopted the design philosophy of “fluid sculpture,” resembling the larger model, the Sonata.

The Elantra was introduced to the Brazilian market with various engine options over the years, including 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L options, both in gasoline and diesel, depending on the generation. The transmissions varied between automatic 4 and 6-speed and manual 5 and 6-speed, adapting to the needs and preferences of Brazilian consumers.
In addition to the sedan version, the Elantra also had a Coupe version, launched in 2012, and a Station Wagon version, available in the 90s and currently represented by the SW version of the i30, known in the United States as the Elantra Touring. This diversity of models allowed the Elantra to cater to a wide range of customers, seeking everything from the practicality of a family car to the sportiness of a coupe.
In Brazil, the Elantra competed directly with models from other established brands in the C segment, such as Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Volkswagen Jetta, among others. Despite the strong competition, the Elantra stood out for its modern design, list of standard equipment, and the recognized quality of Hyundai products.
The model is manufactured in Ulsan, South Korea, and the 2014 version arrived in the Brazilian market well-equipped, with six airbags, stability and traction control, ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist, reinforcing Hyundai’s commitment to safety and technology.
Discontinuation in Brazil
The Hyundai Elantra was discontinued in Brazil after a challenging sales period. Launched in the country in 2011 by Caoa, the official importer of the Korean brand, the Elantra arrived with high expectations, initially featuring a 1.8 engine and later a 2.0 flex option with 167 hp. Despite a promising start, with 7,973 units sold in 2012 and reaching eighth place in its segment, sales progressively decreased over the years.
In 2019, the model saw its sales drop to just 82 units, all from the penultimate generation, with the most recent model year found in the used market being 2018. This sales decline led Hyundai to cease imports of the Elantra to Brazil. The newest generation of the model, which was unveiled at the São Paulo International Motor Show in 2018, was never launched in the country.
