With Simple Design and Fame for Being Indestructible, the Nokia 3310 Turns 25 as One of the Most Iconic Cell Phones in History
Before the arrival of modern smartphones, the world was introduced to much simpler cell phones. Making calls and sending messages was all that was expected of a device. Among these basic models, one stood out and became a symbol of an era: the Nokia 3310. Launched in September 2000, the device turns 25 as one of the most remembered cell phones in history.
At that time, the phone was sold in various colors, but the traditional blue model became the most iconic. In Brazil, it became popularly known as the “indestructible” brick Nokia.
Its reputation for being sturdy gained so much traction that it became a meme on social media and continues to be remembered for its almost unbreakable casing.

In 2017, Nokia launched an updated version of the 3310. The modern reinterpretation stayed true to the original design, with minor changes and some new features.
The new model gained a microSD card slot, headphone jack, and USB charging. Even so, it remained basic.
It didn’t have Wi-Fi, GPS, or the more modern functions of today’s smartphones. But it brought back the classic Snake game.
Before Smartphones
At the time of its launch, the 3310 arrived in a landscape without Apple’s iPhone or Samsung’s Galaxy.
Nokia dominated the market, alongside brands like Motorola and BlackBerry. The predecessor model, the Nokia 3210, had already sold over 160 million units.
Still, the 3310 carved its niche and became a true reference.
Durability and Long-Lasting Battery
According to the company itself, over 126 million units of the 3310 were sold worldwide. A global success.
And for good reasons: in addition to making calls and sending SMS, the device had a battery that lasted for days. In an age of constant charging, this autonomy is missed.
The phone also stood out for its durability. Its rigid plastic structure and well-protected components created the reputation that the device couldn’t break.
While today’s smartphones can crack with a single drop, the 3310 was seen as “unbreakable.” This reputation spread and became a recurring joke on the internet.
Another notable aspect was its size. The phone was small and easily fit in pockets. It had rounded corners, a simple interface, and an easy-to-use physical keyboard.
No touch screens or powerful cameras. The monochrome display of the 3310 had only 84 x 48 pixels. Even so, it performed its role well.
Monophonic ringtones also marked the era. And there was a unique feature: users could create their own ringtones. A simple function, but it was very popular among device owners.
The Success of the Snake Game
In terms of entertainment, the standout was the game Snake II, also known as the famous Snake game.
The game involved guiding a snake across the screen, eating dots and growing longer. The longer the snake, the harder it became to control its movements. It was an addictive challenge.
The first version of Snake was launched in 1976, as an arcade game called Blockade. Over time, the style gained new versions.
But it was on the Nokia 3310 that the game became a phenomenon. The battery lasted for days, allowing users to play without worrying about constant recharges.
From Infrared to Modern Touch
Snake II was the evolution of a game that had already been present on the Nokia 6110 in 1998. At that time, programmer Taneli Armanto developed the game to utilize the phone’s infrared feature, allowing two-player matches.
The idea came from the company’s marketing team, but it ended up functioning well even in single-player mode.
The Legacy of the Nokia 3310
Other versions were launched later, such as Snake III, Snake EX, and Snake Subsonic. None had the same impact as Snake II. Still, the style lives on.
Today, it is possible to download similar games in app stores like Google Play Store and Apple Store.
The story of the Nokia 3310 shows how a simple yet efficient device can leave a mark on generations. Its legacy goes beyond sales figures or design.
It represents an era when technology was more straightforward, and perhaps that’s why it was more enduring.
