After Having Its Licenses Revoked by Aneel, Karpowership Requested the Suspension of the Revocations Until the End of the Judgment of Its Floating Thermal Power Project in Rio de Janeiro and the New Director General of the Agency Accepted the Request.

The new director general of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), Sandoval Feitosa, accepted Karpowership’s requests and suspended the revocation of the licenses for the project of the company’s four floating thermal plants in Rio de Janeiro. The news was recently announced, and as long as the judgment regarding the issues in question is not finalized, the company will continue with its energy production project.

Floating Thermal Power Project of Four Karpowership Plants in Rio de Janeiro Achieves Suspension of License Revocation by Aneel

Arriving at the presidency of the agency already with significant decisions for the Brazilian energy sector, the new director general of Aneel suspended the license revocation for Karpowership’s project of four floating thermal plants in Rio de Janeiro. The news was announced in a new order published in yesterday’s edition of the Official Gazette of the Union (DFOU), and Karpowership is already aware of the new directions for its project in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

After a series of requests from the energy company, the new director general of Aneel implemented the suspension of the effects of the resolutions that revoked the licenses for the Karkey 13, Karkey 19, Porsud I, and Porsud II plants. Thus, until the end of the reconsideration judgment opened by the company, Karpowership will be able to continue its energy production venture in the Rio de Janeiro region.

The business was blocked by the 2nd Public Finance Court of Rio de Janeiro, which announced that the decision was motivated by the lack of an Environmental Impact Study (EIA) and an Environmental Impact Report (Rima).

The project of the floating thermal plants in the state of Rio de Janeiro was part of the emergency auction held in October for energy supply, one of the measures against the water crisis that occurred last year.

Together, they have a total of 560 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, essential for supplying the state of Rio de Janeiro with this resource. However, Karpowership ended up not delivering the start of productivity within the time frame set by Aneel, thereby causing the revocation of the licenses previously granted by the agency.

Company Continues to Stand Against the Decisions to Revoke the Licenses for the Floating Thermal Project and Claims to Be in Compliance with the Legislation

Karpowership had already commented on the revocation of the licenses for the project in a statement released in recent weeks, stating that it did not agree with Aneel’s position. Additionally, it stated that it did not agree with the decision but would continue to support the national market, aiming to make the energy production sector fairer, safer, and more competitive with the development of new production projects in the future.

Now, with the suspension of the revocation, carried out by the new director general of Aneel, the company has commented on the situation again, claiming that it is in compliance with the legislation for the floating thermal project. It also highlighted that it has conducted over 50 environmental studies and obtained an operating license from the state environmental agency.
