The Audiovisual Sector Already Generates More Jobs Than The Automotive Industry And Contributes R$ 70 Billion To The GDP. Cinema, TV, Streaming, And The Internet Become Pillars Of Brazil’s New Economy.

Brazil is undergoing a silent transformation in its economy. While traditional sectors, such as automobiles, face declines in production and jobs, the audiovisual sector has become one of the engines of national economic growth. According to a survey by Oxford Economics in partnership with the Motion Picture Association, the audiovisual sector generated approximately R$ 70.2 billion in 2024 and created over 600,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country. The sector already employs more people than the automotive industry and has an increasingly significant impact on Brazilian families’ incomes.

What Is The Audiovisual Sector

The audiovisual sector is much broader than just cinema and television. It encompasses the production of films, series, soap operas, advertising, internet videos, games, and streaming platforms. It also involves studios, screenwriters, sound and image technicians, producers, costume designers, and thousands of professionals working behind the scenes.

According to the National Cinema Agency (Ancine), the growth of digital platforms and video content consumption has significantly increased the number of local productions in recent years.

Today, cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Curitiba, and Fortaleza already host audiovisual production hubs that employ thousands of workers.

The Economic Weight Of The Audiovisual Sector

According to the report cited by the Metrópoles portal, the Brazilian audiovisual sector generates R$ 70.2 billion in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and drives a chain of over 608,000 jobs.

The impact is comparable to strategic industrial sectors. The audiovisual sector already surpasses the automotive industry and is on par with the pharmaceutical sector in job creation, according to data from Agência Brasil.

For every R$ 1 invested in audiovisual production, it is estimated that another R$ 2.60 is generated in the economy. This return relationship occurs because content production involves transportation, lodging, food, technology, clothing, and a wide network of suppliers.

How Streaming Changed The Market

The advancement of streaming has been decisive for the sector’s growth. Platforms like Netflix, Globoplay, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney+, and YouTube have begun investing in local productions, hiring Brazilian teams and stimulating the independent market.

These productions require complete technical teams and help develop new professional skills, such as digital editing, visual effects, and scripting for online platforms.

According to Ancine, the number of Brazilian works licensed for streaming increased by over 60% between 2020 and 2024. This created opportunities for regional producers and new talents outside the Rio–São Paulo axis.

The Audiovisual Sector As Public Policy

The audiovisual sector has also gained strength from incentive policies, such as the Sectoral Fund for Audiovisual (FSA), which finances productions throughout the country.

Created by Ancine, the fund is supported by fees collected from broadcasters, cinemas, and on-demand video services.

The FSA has helped form a new generation of professionals and expanded Brazil’s presence at international festivals. The financial return, according to the fund itself, exceeds the investment in many productions, showing that culture is also economic development.

Why The Audiovisual Sector Is The “New Giant”

The audiovisual sector combines culture, technology, and jobs. It transforms creativity into products and generates billions of reais every year. More than just entertainment, it is an industry of ideas and innovation that creates opportunities in all regions of the country.

While the automotive industry faces fluctuations linked to consumption and imports, the audiovisual sector grows driven by the increasing demand for video content, the digitalization of the economy, and the globalization of platforms.

Today, those working in audiovisual are at the center of one of the fastest-growing professions in Brazil. It is a sector that blends art, technique, technology, and entrepreneurship, and is already showing strength to lead the country’s creative development in the coming years.

Brazil is discovering in audiovisual a new economic engine. The combination of creativity, technology, and global market makes the sector a powerhouse capable of creating jobs, generating income, and strengthening national identity.

From films and soap operas to games and internet videos, Brazilian audiovisual proves that the country can grow through culture and the creative intelligence of its people.
