The New Generation of the Hyundai HB20 Promises Significant Changes in Design, Increased Size, Known Engines, and a Possible Hybrid Version in a Global Project That Aims to Reposition the Hatch in the Brazilian Market Starting in 2026.

The new generation of the Hyundai HB20, expected to debut in 2026, will bring significant changes in design, size, and technology.

The model, which remains one of the best-selling cars of the brand in Brazil, will adopt larger proportions, lines inspired by European design, and will retain the 1.0 naturally aspirated and 1.0 turbo flex engines.

The information was revealed by Autoesporte, based on sightings abroad and in the country, as well as projections by João Kleber Amaral, published by the Spanish website Motor.es.

European Design and Totally Redesigned Body

The projections show a longer and lower hood, headlights connected by an illuminated front strip, and columns painted in glossy black.

According to the images, the tall and flat roof and the ascending waistline — with a slight bulge on the rear door — should enhance the impression of robustness.

According to automotive design experts, the changes indicate an aesthetic repositioning of the HB20, which will move away from its current rounded appearance to adopt flatter surfaces and a medium hatch silhouette.

Hyundai has not confirmed official project details, but industry sources claim that the new generation will be entirely new, without structural reuse from the current model.

Larger Dimensions and Focus on Interior Space

The estimates released by Autoesporte indicate that the car should measure around 4.10 meters in length, with wheelbase expanded to approximately 2.58 meters.

With this, the new HB20 will come closer to competitors like the Chevrolet Onix (4.16 m and 2.55 m) and the Volkswagen Polo (4.07 m and 2.57 m).

The trunk, which currently offers 300 liters, could reach about 330 liters, according to sources linked to production.

The width is expected to reach 1.80 meters, and the height, around 1.50 meters.

Engineers consulted by the industry state that the increase in dimensions should ensure better internal space utilization, providing a more comfortable experience for rear-seat occupants.

Technical Relationship with the European i20

According to specialized press sources, the new HB20 will begin to share design elements and technical solutions with the European i20.

This includes suspension adjustments, acoustic insulation, and assembly quality similar to that used in models produced in Europe.

Hyundai sources indicate that the project is global, but adapted to the conditions and costs of the Brazilian market.

Although the brand has not yet disclosed the platform, industry analysts believe that adopting wider tracks should contribute to a more stable and quieter driving experience.

1.0 Naturally Aspirated and Turbo Engines Remain in Brazil

The engine lineup will remain the same as currently used in the country.

The entry versions should keep the 1.0 naturally aspirated flex engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission, while the more equipped configurations will continue with the 1.0 turbo flex and six-speed automatic transmission.

In Europe, the Hyundai i20, derived from the same project, offers the 1.0 turbo three-cylinder Kappa engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

There is also a full hybrid version, with about 130 hp.

According to industry sources, an electrified option is also being considered for the Brazilian market, but still without official confirmation from the manufacturer.

Equipment and Embedded Technology

Although Hyundai has not disclosed the list of equipment, industry observers expect the model to receive new electronic features, following the segment trend.

Among the possibilities are full LED lighting, larger multimedia screen, and driving assistants, such as lane departure warning and autonomous braking.

Consulted sources state that the safety package will vary according to the version, as is the case with the main competitors, and that items will be gradually introduced according to the brand’s pricing policy in Brazil.

Production in Piracicaba and Launch Confirmed for 2026

The official launch is scheduled to take place in 2026, as a 2027 line.

The production will continue in Piracicaba (SP), the plant responsible for manufacturing the HB20 since 2012.

Hyundai is expected to keep the current model in line until the arrival of the new generation, with a transition phase similar to that which occurred in previous platform changes.

Automotive industry experts assess that the new product cycle strengthens the brand’s investment in the country and consolidates the HB20 as a strategic pillar of local operations.

The São Paulo factory is also expected to serve as a base for new variations of the family, leveraging the platform to expand the national portfolio.

SUV Version and Competition Among Compact Crossovers

In addition to the hatch, Hyundai is working on a SUV version derived from the same project.

According to production sources, the model will be positioned below the Creta and will compete with Volkswagen Tera, Fiat Pulse, and Renault Kardian.

Analysts point out that creating a compact SUV will allow the automaker to compete in the entry-level crossover segment, which has been experiencing continuous growth in the Brazilian market.

There is currently no information on the commercial name or the engines that will equip this new variant.

Expectations and Impact on the Automotive Market

With the increased size and updated design, the new HB20 is expected to seek a positioning closer to medium hatches, according to automotive consulting assessments.

The goal is to offer a more spacious and technologically competitive car, while maintaining focus on efficiency and maintenance cost.

The introduction of hybrid versions, if confirmed, would be an important step toward the emission and consumption targets that have been expanding in Brazil and other markets in the region.

Experts highlight that the strategy follows the pattern adopted by other automakers, which have gradually expanded their electrified lines.

What remains to be seen is which of these innovations will be prioritized by Hyundai in the national launch: increased interior space, the technology package, or the potential electrification of the lineup?
