The Proposal of the New Port of São Luís Is to Be a Larger and Better Terminal for the Population. The Main Goal Would Be to Boost the Economy of Maranhão and Generate More Than 10 Thousand Jobs During Its Construction

According to the President of the Private Use Terminal Porto São Luís S.A, Helder Dantas, São Luís will receive a new Port that has an even better and more effective project than the initial project and will generate thousands of jobs in the initial construction phase. The port should have handling capacity of about ten million tons per year, distributed in seven million of soy and corn, 1.5 million of fertilizers, 1.5 million of general cargo, and 1.8 million cubic meters of oil derivatives.

The Importance of the Port for the State of Maranhão

According to Helder, it is unacceptable for a project like this to be unfeasible given its excellent geographical location like the Bay of São Marcos with its deep draught. Especially at a time like this when Maranhão needs to accelerate its economy to combat the crisis imposed by the pandemic.

The Porto São Luís is strategic and vital for the development of the state. He explained that the delay of the port occurred due to various factors that are common in Brazil in complex projects like this, such as bureaucracy in obtaining licenses, land issues, authorizations, and permits with public agencies across various levels of government, currency fluctuations, among others.

Helder Claims That the Works of the Port of São Luís Have Never Stopped

The teams of Porto São Luís have been kept active in more than 120 job posts. These teams carry out construction and maintenance activities of the port’s infrastructure, control systems, environmental monitoring, surveillance, and other actions that, according to Helder, have never stopped.

The shareholders remain committed to the construction of this project in São Luís which is now larger and better after several revisions. The project will be responsible not only for generating direct and indirect jobs but will also accelerate the development of the country.

According to Helder, the port has never stopped and continues to develop several relevant social actions benefiting seven communities in the surrounding area such as Cajueiro, Vila Maranhão, Mãe Chica, Porto Grande, Sítio São Benedito, Taim, Rio dos Cachorros. Even with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, actions such as the creation of a recreation area, medical consultations, promotion of professional training courses, and donations of masks and hand sanitizer to the people of these communities have been carried out.

More Than 10 Thousand Jobs Will Be Generated During Construction

Another action underway is the construction of a Civil Police station and a Military Police unit at Km 7 of BR135 in Vila Maranhão, which is about to be completed.

This action, which is linked to the project, will provide greater security for the communities and create a strategic point for the intelligence of both police forces. In addition to this action, there is also a commitment to build a health post, a daycare, and a school in the region.

The Porto São Luís promises to generate more than 2,500 direct jobs and approximately 7,500 indirect jobs during its construction period. More than 850 direct jobs and 3,400 indirect jobs will be created during the operation phase.
