Meet the New Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, A Robust and Compact Option to Face Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, and Ford Bronco
The automotive industry has been swept by a nostalgic trend, where retro and vintage design has become a fashion. Toyota, known for its innovation, is not out of this wave. This year, the automaker introduced the new generation of its iconic 4×4 SUV, the Land Cruiser, with a more angular and robust design. But the news doesn’t stop there, as rumors indicate that the legendary Land Cruiser FJ is about to make a triumphant return.
A New Chapter in Toyota’s History
According to information from the Autocar India site, Toyota has registered the name Land Cruiser FJ in Japan, suggesting that a new model is in development. Sources from the site claim that this new SUV will be smaller and more robust, positioning itself below the recently launched Land Cruiser. This makes the Land Cruiser FJ the fifth member of Toyota’s 4×4 lineup, alongside the Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser LC 300, SW4, and 4Runner.
The Story Behind the Name
The Land Cruiser FJ has a long history that dates back to the FJ20, launched in 1955. This model was sold in Brazil as Bandeirante and left an indelible mark on the hearts of off-road vehicle enthusiasts. Since then, Toyota has continued to use the name Land Cruiser FJ, with the last instance being a retro-styled SUV between 2006 and 2022, which even had some units imported to Brazil independently.

It surpassed the T-Cross, Creta, and Tracker: with nearly 8,000 units sold, the Volkswagen Tera was the best-selling SUV in March 2026.

Honda performs miracles in fuel consumption with a hatch that marks 13.2 km/l in the city and 15 km/l on the highway, leaving Polo, HB20, 208, and Onix behind and becoming a reference among compact cars without resorting to turbo or hybrid systems.

With 122 hp, fuel consumption of up to 17.7 km/l, and a trunk capacity of 440 liters, this hybrid SUV impresses even though it costs up to R$ 47,000 more than the Yaris — meet the Toyota Corolla Cross.

The Return of the Icon
The new Land Cruiser FJ is likely to be a production version of the concept presented by Toyota last year, the Toyota Compact Cruiser. The SUV will inherit the concept’s design, with more squared and defined lines, maintaining retro inspiration. The teaser released by Toyota during the launch of the Land Cruiser suggests that the new model will be smaller than the 4.92 meters in length of the new Land Cruiser, positioning itself as an entry-level model for off-road enthusiasts.
Retro Design and Modern Performance
The design of the new Land Cruiser FJ promises to combine classic elements with modern technology. Inspired by the Compact Cruiser concept, the SUV will have straighter and more defined lines, without many creases on the bodywork. This creates a nostalgic aesthetic that recalls classic Toyota models while offering an updated and elegant look.
Inside, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to provide a spacious and comfortable interior, with high-quality finishes and cutting-edge technology. Features such as an advanced infotainment system, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and customization options should be available to meet the needs of modern drivers.

Superior Off-Road Performance
Like its predecessors, the new Land Cruiser FJ will be designed to offer exceptional off-road performance. With four-wheel drive and a robust suspension, the SUV will be capable of tackling the toughest terrains with ease. Additionally, the vehicle is expected to feature a variety of driving modes and driver assistance systems to ensure a safe and exciting off-road experience.
The engine of the new Land Cruiser FJ is still a mystery, but it is very likely that it will utilize the 2.8 turbodiesel engine with 204 hp that we are well familiar with from our Hilux and SW4 sold here. This engine works in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
