For a decade, hundreds of thousands of people searched for a chest with US$ 1 million hidden by an eccentric millionaire in the Rocky Mountains, a search that ended with deaths, lawsuits, and a mystery that lingers.
In 2010, an art dealer and retired war hero named Forrest Fenn announced that he had hidden a treasure somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Inside a 12th-century bronze chest, he placed gold nuggets, rare coins, jewelry, and ancient artifacts. The estimated value of the chest with US$ 1 million sparked one of the largest and most dangerous treasure hunts in modern history.
The only clue was an enigmatic 24-line poem. What followed was a decade of obsession that mobilized over 350,000 people, created a vibrant online culture, cost personal fortunes, and, tragically, the lives of at least five adventurers. This is the story of how the search for Forrest Fenn’s chest with US$ 1 million became a cultural phenomenon.
Who Was Forrest Fenn?
To understand the hunt, one must understand its creator. Forrest Fenn was a complex figure. A hero of the Vietnam War, decorated for his bravery after being shot down twice, he became an eccentric and successful art and artifact dealer in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The idea of the treasure emerged in 1988 when Fenn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He planned to hide the chest and die beside it, leaving a legacy. He survived the disease, but the idea remained. In 2010, with the stated goal of “getting people off the couch” and providing hope during the economic recession, he finally hid the treasure and published the poem, kicking off the hunt.
The 9-Clue Poem and the Gold Fever That Lasted 10 Years (2010-2020)

The poem, published in Fenn’s memoir, “The Thrill of the Chase,” contained nine clues that, if followed in the correct order, would lead to the treasure. Its ambiguous language allowed for infinite interpretations, fueling the fever.
A massive online community formed in forums like Reddit and blogs. There, hunters from around the world shared their theories, decoded every interview with Fenn, and documented their expeditions, called “BOTG” (Boots on the Ground). The search for the chest with US$ 1 million turned into an obsession that consumed lives, with people quitting jobs and spending their savings on the adventure.
The 5 Deaths During the Hunt
The search for fortune had a tragic cost. Over the decade, at least five men died while searching for the treasure. The deaths occurred in different states, usually from drowning or falls in remote and dangerous areas.
After the third death in 2017, the chief of police in New Mexico publicly urged Fenn to end the hunt. He refused, stating that the location was not dangerous and that an 80-year-old man could easily reach it. Despite pleas for caution, the promise of treasure continued to draw people into risky situations.
The Discovery of the Chest with US$ 1 Million in 2020 and the Revelation of the Hunter

On June 6, 2020, Forrest Fenn announced that the treasure had been found by a “man from the east” who did not wish to be identified. The news, without details about the location or solution, generated a wave of frustration and accusations that it was all a hoax. To quell the rumors, Fenn released photos of the chest and revealed the state where it was hidden: Wyoming.
The identity of the discoverer remained a secret until December 2020. Pressured by a lawsuit, Jack Stuef, a 32-year-old medical student, revealed himself to be the lucky hunter. He stated that he found the treasure not by deciphering codes, but by studying Fenn’s personality to understand how he thought.
Legal Battles, An Auction, and A New Hunt
The end of the hunt initiated a new battle, this time in the courts. Several disgruntled hunters sued Fenn’s estate and Jack Stuef, alleging fraud and theft of the solution. All the lawsuits were dismissed due to lack of evidence.
The contents of the chest with US$ 1 million finally came to light in December 2022, when most items were auctioned off, raising over US$ 1.3 million. However, the story did not end there. Justin Posey, one of the original hunt participants, acquired some artifacts and launched his own treasure hunt, with a new poem and a new prize, keeping alive the legacy of Forrest Fenn and proving that the “thrill of the chase” continues.
