An Analysis of the Liebherr T 282C Off-Highway Truck, a 237-Ton Giant That Transports 400 Tons of Ore Per Trip at the World’s Largest Open-Pit Mine, with Engines Up to 3,750 HP.

The Liebherr T 282C off-highway truck is critical equipment in large-scale mining operations, such as in the Carajás Mine, Pará. This 237-ton empty weight giant is designed to transport 400 tons (short tons) of ore per trip, powered by engines that can reach up to 3,750 HP.

This article analyzes the specifications and operation of this colossus in the world’s largest open-pit iron ore mine. Efficiency in transporting large volumes is crucial for the economic viability of ventures like Carajás, operated by Vale S.A.

The Liebherr T 282C Off-Highway Truck and Its Validated Specifications

The specifications of the Liebherr T 282C off-highway truck are impressive and validated by technical sources. Its operational empty weight is 237 metric tons. The nominal payload capacity is 363 metric tons, which translates to the 400 short ton class commonly used in the industry.

The Liebherr T 282C’s engine can reach up to 3,750 HP (2,800 kW). One of the engine options that achieves this power is the MTU 20V4000 C23 Tier II. It is important not to confuse propulsion power with electric dynamic retardation capacity, which may be higher.

Liebherr T 282C Off-Highway Truck The 237-Ton Giant That Carries 400 Tons of Ore in Carajás! Details of the 3,750 HP Engine and Its Operation

The Liebherr T 282C off-highway truck was launched in 2010, evolving from the T 282B model (2004) and was later succeeded by the T 284. It employs the Liebherr Litronic Plus IGBT AC drive system, known for its efficiency and smooth acceleration. The T 282C offers powerful engine options from MTU and Cummins, with powers ranging from 3,500 HP to 3,750 HP (or even up to 4,000 HP in some configurations), meeting different emission standards.

With a length of approximately 15.69m, a width of 9.679m, and a height of 8.294m, the T 282C has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 600 metric tons. Improvements over the T 282B include a new chassis, axle box, enhanced cabin, and Liebherr’s own drive system. Technologies such as the Litronic Plus control system, integrated diagnostics, and ROPS-certified cabin enhance its productivity and safety.

In Operation at the World’s Largest Mine

The Carajás Mine, in Parauapebas (PA), operated by Vale S.A., is confirmed as the largest open-pit iron ore mine in the world. Its reserves are estimated at around 7.2 billion metric tons of high-quality ore. In 2024, Vale’s production in Carajás was 177.5 million tons, aiming to reach 200 Mtpa by 2030 through the “New Carajás Program,” a R$70 billion investment.

The transport fleet in Carajás includes large trucks from various manufacturers, such as Komatsu and Caterpillar. The presence of Liebherr T 282B trucks (363t/400 short tons) in Carajás has been documented since 2009. Given the T 282C’s launch date (2010) and fleet renewal cycles, it is highly plausible that T 282C units also operate or have operated in the mine.

The Performance and Adaptation of the Liebherr T 282C Off-Highway Truck in Carajás

At the Carajás Mine, the Liebherr T 282C off-highway truck (and its predecessor T 282B) transport iron ore from the mining fronts for crushing and overburden to the piles. These trucks are paired with large hydraulic excavators, such as the Liebherr R 9800, to optimize the loading and transport cycle. The operation faces challenges such as high temperatures, humidity, and dust, for which Liebherr trucks are designed, with robust cooling systems and the ability to operate between -40°C and +50°C.

Vale is implementing a trolley assist system in Carajás to reduce diesel consumption and emissions. The Liebherr T 282B is compatible with this technology, and the T 282C, being an evolution with a similar drive system, is also inherently compatible. Liebherr actively develops solutions such as the Trolley Guidance System, aligning with Vale’s sustainability goals.

Comparisons and the Future in Mining

The Liebherr T 282C off-highway truck competes in the 400 short ton class with models such as the Caterpillar 797F (4,000 HP, mechanical) and the Komatsu 980E-5SE (up to 4,400 HP, electric AC). Fuel efficiency is a critical factor, and the T 282C was designed to minimize it through its AC drive system and load management. The choice between electric and mechanical drive systems involves trade-offs in efficiency and compatibility with emerging technologies such as trolley assist.

Reliability and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) are determinants in the selection. While anecdotal reports vary, Liebherr designed the T 282C to reduce operational costs with durable components and advanced diagnostics. The validation of inquiry data on the T 282C is largely accurate, and its features align with the needs of operations like Carajás, which seek to optimize production, costs, and sustainability.
