Recent Data Reveals That The Habit Of Ironing Clothes Is Diminishing Drastically In Brazil, Driven By The Search For Practicality And New Technological Fabrics, While Experts Share Valuable Tips To Maintain A Good Appearance Without Wasting Time With The Iron.

One of the most traditional and, at the same time, most feared household chores in Brazil is experiencing a decline in its popularity. The act of ironing clothes, which for decades symbolized care and organization of the home, is losing ground to the relentless search for practicality and textile technology.

A report aired by Jornal da Band highlights how modern exhausting routines are redefining people’s relationship with the ironing board and piles of clothing.

The Tradition That Resists Time

Despite the growing rejection, the iron still maintains its honored place in some households. For Carla, a character interviewed in the report, wrinkled clothes are unacceptable.

In her home, the rule is clear and encompasses everything from shirts and pants to bed linen. Unlike most, she describes the process as an enjoyable, almost therapeutic activity. “It’s enjoyable to take that wrinkled piece and then see it looking so nice“, she states.

To make the task less burdensome, Carla adopts entertainment strategies, such as setting aside nights to iron while watching soccer games. “I already suffer along with them”, she jokes, referring to the tension of the matches. For her, the habit is a solid family cultural inheritance.

“It’s really a family habit. My mother also piles her clothes, and so does my sister”, she explains, even expressing admiration for the steam from professional laundry machines.

New Behaviors And The Search For Ease

However, Carla’s dedication is becoming a statistical exception. The report indicates that many Brazilians have already abandoned the habit or keep it only out of strict necessity.

Data from the “Google Digital Room”, presented in the article, confirms this cultural transformation: in the last five years, searches for clothes that don’t wrinkle or that don’t need to be ironed have increased by 189% in Brazil.

The rejection of the appliance is evident in the streets. Interviewees confess to hating the task, admitting that they only resort to the iron when there is no other viable option for personal presentation. Practicality has become the guiding principle, prompting the fashion industry to invest in technological fabrics that eliminate the need for thermal smoothing.

Tactics To Retire The Ironing Board

Joice, a style consultant heard by Jornal da Band, firmly positions herself on the side of the “iron haters”. An expert in optimizing time without neglecting appearance, she teaches that the secret to retiring the iron starts with washing. “The first thing: once you take the clothes out of the machine, shake them, and hang them to dry. With the weight of the clothes, they will stay straight”, she explains.

In addition to the drying method, the consultant suggests using modern products, such as wrinkle-release sprays, that work by applying the liquid to the dry garment and smoothing it out with hands.

Popular creativity is also not far behind: techniques such as using steam from the shower while bathing to unwrinkle clothes hanging in the bathroom are widely circulated. According to Joice, part of the solution also involves a change in mindset: “Otherwise, you’ll have to wear wrinkled clothes and just accept that too”.
