More Than a Simple Accessory, Some Items Can Mean a Smart Investment for Your Vehicle. Discover Which Components Really Increase the Value of Your Used Car and How the “Fever” of Appreciation for Accessories Applies to the National Market.

The promise of increasing the value of a used car by up to 20% with a single item has caught the attention of Brazilians. But is this “discovery” real? We investigated the impact of accessories on resale prices and what truly influences this appreciation in the competitive used car market.

Does a Single Accessory Guarantee 20% More for Your Used Car?

The idea that a single accessory can raise the value of a used car by up to 20% in Brazil sparks interest, but this claim seems overly optimistic for the national market. Although the search for appreciation strategies is constant, the assertion of 20% for a common standalone item lacks strong support. Sources indicate that accessories do contribute to valuing the vehicle, but documented appreciations for items such as leather seats or alloy wheels are generally lower. The profitability of dealerships with Finance & Insurance (F&I), which includes accessories, does not directly translate into resale appreciation for the consumer. In practice, accessories influence value through visual appeal, like alloy wheels, or comfort, like leather seats. Multimedia centers add functionality, while alarms and airbags enhance safety. It is crucial to distinguish “adding value” from “recouping investment,” as the buyer pays more for what truly values and differentiates the used car.

Which Accessories Really Increase the Price?

In the Brazilian used car market, some accessories consistently influence resale value. Multimedia centers, leather seats, alloy wheels, and factory sunroofs are often mentioned as value enhancers. Air conditioning and safety items such as alarms, airbags, ABS, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are also crucial. The originality of the accessory, such as a factory sunroof, carries significant weight. It is important to note that some items effectively “add value,” justifying a higher price. Others, like air conditioning and mandatory safety items (front airbags and ABS for cars manufactured from 2014 onward), work more on the logic that their “absence significantly devalues” the used car, making it harder to sell.

The Real Impact of the Most Desirable Items in Used Cars

Certain accessories stand out in modernizing and enhancing the driving experience of a used car. Modern multimedia centers, with smartphone mirroring and high-resolution screens, are a strong selling point, potentially speeding up negotiations and justifying a slightly higher price. Their installation cost, typically between R$ 1,000 and R$ 3,000, requires attention to the quality of the device and service, as poor installation can jeopardize the warranty. Leather seats are another standout item, potentially increasing resale prices by up to 15% due to their premium aesthetics, ease of cleaning, and durability. Installation costs range from R$ 600 to R$ 3,500, but the condition of the leather is crucial.

Alloy wheels can raise the value by up to 10%, giving a sporty look, although the cost, starting from R$ 1,500 per set, is not always fully recovered. The sunroof, especially factory-installed, is a valued differentiator. Aftermarket installations are risky and can devalue the used car. Items like air conditioning, power steering, power windows and locks, alarms, and parking sensors are basic comforts or safety features that, more than adding percentage value, prevent significant devaluation and ensure liquidity for the used car. Airbags, ABS, and, more recently, ESC (mandatory in new cars since 2024) are essential; a used car with ESC already stands out.

Care That Goes Beyond Accessories for Your Used Car

Although accessories help, the overall condition of the used car is decisive for maximizing its value. Rigorous preventive maintenance, with a history of reviews, inspires confidence in the buyer. Aesthetic preservation, with shiny paint, bodywork without significant dents, and a clean, odor-free interior, is the car’s business card. Keeping the vehicle’s originality is, in most cases, the best strategy, as excessive or very personalized customizations can limit the interested audience. For sale, impeccable cleaning, good photos for online listings, and a detailed and honest description are crucial. The documentation of the used car must be strictly up-to-date, free of fines or debts, and having a manual and spare key demonstrates care.

Smart Strategies for Investing (or Not) in Accessories

The appreciation of a used car is a multifactorial process, and the idea of a magical item that guarantees 20% is a myth. The Brazilian “discovery” about appreciation through accessories seems to be more of an evolution in consumer awareness, driven by new technologies and easier access to information, than a revelation. When considering investment, cost-benefit analysis is essential. Small aesthetic care, such as polishing (R$ 200 – R$ 500) or detailed cleaning (R$ 130 – R$ 200), usually offers an excellent return on investment. Modern multimedia centers (R$ 1,000 – R$ 3,000) and well-maintained leather seats (R$ 600 – R$ 3,500) can be good investments, as long as the cost is proportional to the overall value of the used car. For owners, the recommendation is to prioritize maintenance and the overall condition of the vehicle. Invest strategically in quality accessories and be realistic about the return.
