The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Made Heavy Criticisms of Brazil Due to Its Neutral Posture in the Attempts to Elaborate a Peace Agreement Between Russia and Ukraine. This Criticism Was Endorsed by the United States, European Union, and Other Countries. Both the Current Brazilian Government and the Previous One Adopt a Neutral and Pragmatic Attitude Toward the War in Ukraine.
Brazil has a long tradition of neutrality in international conflicts, based on principles of non-intervention and peaceful resolution of disputes. During World War I and World War II, Brazil initially remained neutral, but eventually entered the conflicts alongside the United States due to attacks suffered and American pressure. After these conflicts, Brazil continued to value national sovereignty and non-intervention.
During the Cold War, even aligned with the capitalist bloc, Brazil maintained ties with socialist countries. In the Falklands War, it adopted a neutral posture, even recognizing the legitimacy of the Argentine claim. In the current scenario, Brazil continues to try to mediate international crises, offering itself as a location for negotiations and dialogues.
Volodymyr Zelensky Criticized Brazil After the Country Was Left Out of the Joint Statement Signed at the Last Summit for Peace in Switzerland
He stated that he will only listen to Brazil when it adopts the principles of civilized nations: “As soon as Brazil and China adopt the principles that united all of us today as diplomatic nations, we will be pleased to hear their points of view, even if they differ from the majority of the world,” declared Zelensky. The European Union, United States, Argentina, and even Kenya endorsed this criticism.

Besides Brazil, China, India, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates did not sign the document. All are part of BRICS, except for the United Arab Emirates. The Brazilian government defended holding a peace conference that is recognized by both Ukrainians and Russians.
The Brazilian President Declared That the Resistance From Both Sides to Talk About Peace Hinders Negotiations:
“As there is still a lot of resistance, both from Zelensky and Putin to discuss peace, each has their own view of peace as they want. And, after a document signed with China, we are proposing that there be an effective negotiation, that we bring Russia and Zelensky to the table and see if it is possible to convince him that peace will bring better results than war.”
This neutral and pragmatic position of Brazil, however, seems to be displeasing the Western side and generating criticism from important international leaders. History shows that Brazil’s neutrality has an expiration date, and eventually the country may need to choose a side.
