The 1.3 Turbo Engine of the New Fiat with 185 HP, the SUV-Coupe Signed by Abarth Surpasses Rivals Like Nivus and Tracker in Performance, but Makes Important Concessions in Safety and Price

The Fiat Fastback Abarth has hit the market with a bold promise: to be a “Super Sports SUV”. To achieve this, the brand has gone all-in on the performance of its mechanical set, led by the powerful 1.3 Turbo Engine of the New Fiat. With a price of R$ 162,990 in June 2025, the model targets a consumer seeking the thrill and excitement of a sports car, but with the design and versatility of an SUV.

The strategy is clear: to dominate the category in terms of acceleration. The numbers confirm that the Fastback Abarth is indeed faster than its direct competitors, the Volkswagen Nivus and the Chevrolet Tracker. However, this speed comes at a cost, reflecting in crucial areas like safety, where the model makes concessions that could weigh in on the purchasing decision.

Fastback Abarth Against Nivus and Tracker

The heart of the Fastback Abarth is the T270 engine, a 1.3 Turbo Flex that delivers 185 HP of power and 27.5 kgfm of torque. These numbers alone place it in a different league compared to its rivals. Fiat officially announces that the SUV-Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds, a time worthy of a sports car.

The superiority is evident when compared to its competitors. The Volkswagen Nivus Highline, with its 1.0 Turbo engine producing 128 HP, accomplishes the same task in 9.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Tracker RS 2025, equipped with a 1.2 Turbo engine delivering 141 HP, records a time of 9.7 seconds. Even in tests conducted by specialized media, where the Abarth clocked 8.5 seconds, the advantage over competitors remained indisputable.

How Does the 1.3 Turbo Engine of the New Fiat Transform the Driving Experience?

The true “Scorpion’s Venom” is unleashed via the Poison Mode, activated by an eye-catching red button on the steering wheel. By engaging it, the car’s behavior changes drastically. The throttle response becomes instantaneous, the electric steering becomes firmer for greater precision, and the six-speed automatic transmission begins shifting at higher RPMs.

The Abarth preparation wasn’t limited to software. The exhaust system has been redesigned and features a dual outlet, producing a deeper, more robust sound that amplifies the sense of sportiness. The 1.3 Turbo Engine of the New Fiat showcases all its potential in this mode, turning an ordinary drive into a much more engaging driving experience.

The Price of Performance, Where Does the Abarth Make Concessions?

To deliver such superior performance while maintaining a competitive price, Fiat made choices that directly impact the vehicle’s safety. This is the Achilles’ heel of the Fastback Abarth. The model comes equipped with only four airbags: two front and two side.

The absence of curtain airbags, which protect the heads of rear-seat occupants, is a serious flaw for a car of this category and price, especially when both the VW Nivus and Chevrolet Tracker offer six airbags as standard. Another contentious point is the choice to use drum brakes at the rear. Although Fiat claims they are oversized, this solution is uncommon for a vehicle with a sporty appeal, which theoretically requires greater fatigue resistance during braking.

Who Is the Fastback Abarth For? The Verdict on the Sports SUV

The Fiat Fastback Abarth is not a car for everyone. It is designed for a very specific niche: the enthusiast who prioritizes performance above all. It is the driver who seeks the adrenaline of acceleration and a fun driving dynamic for everyday use.

The purchase of this model is a conscious choice. The consumer exchanges a more robust safety package and, in some cases, better interior space, for the visceral experience that the 1.3 Turbo Engine of the New Fiat, prepared by Abarth, can offer. It occupies a space left vacant by the old “hot hatches”, but with the garb of an SUV that the Brazilian market so desires.
