Project Jaguar Call, The Works at The Mining Company Will Generate Hundreds of Jobs in The Region With Nickel Exploration
The State Department of Environment and Sustainability (Semas) held public hearings on October 10 and 11 in the municipalities of São Félix do Xingu and Tucumã. The focus of these hearings for the works was Project Jaguar, a nickel mining and beneficiation initiative led by Centaurus Nickel Ltda., located in the municipality of São Félix do Xingu, according to the website Portal Canãa.
Project Jaguar for nickel extraction and works is strategically located in the far east of São Félix do Xingu, approximately 40 km from the municipal centers of Ourilândia do Norte and Tucumã. The Portal Canaã team analyzed the Environmental Impact Report (RIMA) in detail to provide in-depth information about the project.
History and Potential of The Nickel Project and Works
The project has roots that date back to 2010 and 2011, when Vale discovered the first nickel deposit in the area. Since then, extensive environmental studies and assessments have been conducted by Vale. In mid-2019, Vale and Centaurus formalized a purchase and sale agreement for mining assets related to Project Jaguar.

The estimated reserve for this job generation project is impressive, totaling 62 million tons of sulfide nickel ore. The planned operation for Project Jaguar is expected to extend over 20 years. As for the total capital investment, the company estimates it will be approximately 500 million dollars, equivalent to about 2.5 billion reais based on the exchange rate of R$ 5/USD. Of this amount, 1.5 billion reais will be invested during the project implementation phase, while 1 billion reais will be allocated after operations begin.
Positive Impact on Job Creation with The Works
A notable point highlighted in the RIMA is the potential positive impact of Project Jaguar on job creation. During the implementation phase, the estimate points to an average workforce of 2,100 workers. During the peak of the works, this number is expected to reach 2,650 jobs. The works represent a significant opportunity for those who are unemployed or seeking new job prospects in the region.
Centaurus, the company leading the nickel exploration and works project, emphasizes its commitment to prioritizing local labor and job creation mainly from the municipalities of São Félix do Xingu, Tucumã, and Ourilândia do Norte. In this way, the employed workers will reflect the socioeconomic context of the area affected by the enterprise, promoting a positive impact on regional development.
The public hearings provided a crucial platform to discuss the aspects of Project Jaguar and its impact on the region, demonstrating Semas’s commitment to promoting transparency and community engagement. If implemented according to the guidelines presented in the RIMA, Project Jaguar has the potential to drive economic and social development in these municipalities, in addition to significantly contributing to the mining industry in Brazil.
