The city of Macaé and its residents, including those from other regions, are eagerly anticipating economic recovery and job opportunities after the joint venture formed by Shell, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), and Pátria Investimentos was announced to invest in the construction of a thermal power plant named Marlin Azul. As soon as it was announced, there was some commotion regarding labor hiring.

Click Petróleo e Gás was able to gather important information in various ways: We personally went to see the progress of the works, contacted government agencies in the city of Macaé, and obtained information about the company in this first stage of the project installation.

• Pátria Investimentos is the fund manager with the largest participation in this project
• Shell will be responsible for supplying gas and marketing the energy
• Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems will provide the gas turbines, using M501JAC technology and the operational equipment
• BIZ Logística e Construções is responsible for the implementation works of the industrial subdivision

The last company listed (BIZ Logística) is the one currently carrying out operations at the subdivision and receiving resumes in person, here in Macaé. The tip came from one of our followers, so we went to the address to check personally, ensuring that this is true news.

Curiosity About the Work

Many wonder what the purpose or practical utility of a thermal power plant would be if, in theory, it is a more expensive type of energy compared to conventional generation.

In the case of the Marlin Azul power plant, the raw material that will make the generators operate will come from the surplus gas from the pre-salt, which is mostly burned nowadays. This is wasted energy that could be used to integrate the energy matrix of the region, significantly reducing the so-called “blackouts.”

Shell, looking for ways to monetize this surplus gas and continue its plans for energy transitions, entered the project.

Unlike other thermal power plants that use coal and other minerals, which are not only highly polluting but also expensive, natural gas emits less carbon dioxide and is extremely cheap.
