Rio de Janeiro, December 12 – Ocyan is arriving in 2020 with important innovations for the subsea construction market in the oil and gas sector. Based on technology, the company has developed two integrated solutions for subsea installations focused on operational efficiency and work optimization: the Drill Lay and the CompRiser. 1 – WHAT DOES EACH OF THE INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS FOR SUBSEA INSTALLATIONS UNDERWAY BY OCYAN CONSIST OF?

The COMPRISER consists of a system of hybrid riser tower made of composite pipe for use in the deep and ultra-deep water oil exploration industry. The thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) used in CompRiser® will be the m-pipe® that brings high resistance to corrosion (for example, CO2 and H₂S) – which is of great value for subsea systems in pre-salt areas, in addition to significant weight reduction and the ability to withstand high temperature and pressure. The mechanical flexibility allows for the design of a new concept for the lower termination (whose patent is still under approval) that allows the riser to be connected directly to the flowline – both rigid and flexible. For this solution, Ocyan partnered with the British company, Magma Global, which manufactures the product, and with BrasFELS for the pre-fabrication of its components and the assembly area of the bundle (set of risers).

In the DRILL LAY, we use a drilling rig for the installation of steel risers joined by mechanical connectors, which replace welding. This way, Ocyan can expand the use of its rigs, reaffirming the increasing integration of services offered by the company to the market, in addition to providing this solution for execution on third-party drilling units.

2 – WHAT IS THE INNOVATION PROCESS USED TO DEVELOP THESE SOLUTIONS?

The COMPRISER® utilizes the characteristics of the composite pipe, such as buoyancy and greater flexibility than steel pipes, to simplify the concept in a more competitive and efficient way. The m-pipe® offers weight reduction, in addition to ensuring buoyancy to the bundle and being resistant to corrosion, withstanding high pressures and high temperature, which is of utmost importance for exploration in pre-salt areas.

Meanwhile, the Drill Lay is in direct synergy with Ocyan’s drilling business unit, as it uses a drilling rig to launch rigid pipes. In other words, the rigs will be used as a platform for other functionalities. The solution bets on increasing the speed of connecting steel pipes, through the use of mechanical connectors, so that the drilling rig can efficiently compete alongside specialized assets in the installation of steel risers.

3 – WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS FOR THE CLIENT IN OPTING FOR ONE OF THE SOLUTIONS?

The COMPRISER brings the advantage of being an unconnected system and, therefore, is expected to compete in the development of deep and ultra-deep fields. The assembly and installation process is quick and, associated with the high potential for standardization, places this solution at a level of direct competitiveness with existing solutions in the market. Manufacturing is also a factor of advantage, as the pipe is delivered in coils and since it does not require welding, which simplifies the assembly of the bundle, that can be completed in less than 30 days. Offshore installation takes another 20 days, without the need for special vessels and low exposure to bad weather conditions. Another positive and advantageous differential is the possibility of achieving high local content.

In this field, the DRILL LAY brings much flexibility to the client and optimizes the service, as it allows for the use of an already contracted asset for drilling activities, the rig, which will also be used as a platform for the installation of the steel risers for the subsea layout. Moreover, the drilling rigs currently have greater availability in the market compared to rigid pipe installation vessels used in the development of deep or ultra-deep fields. The drilling and subsea construction markets have distinct cycles, which can provide an even greater advantage to companies operating in both activities, such as Ocyan.

4 – IS OCYAN THE ONLY COMPANY THAT OFFERS THESE NEW SOLUTIONS TO THE MARKET?

There are other companies in the market that have a riser tower solution, but our studies show that Ocyan is the only company that has developed this solution using composite pipes. In turn, the DRILL LAY is innovative because it uses a drilling asset for the subsea construction market.

5 – WHEN WILL THE SOLUTIONS BE AVAILABLE FOR THE INDUSTRY?

Both solutions are in different qualification processes with clients and certification bodies. Soon, they will be part of the subsea construction portfolio that we offer to the market.
