Rio de Janeiro, December 1, 2020 – To provide a more optimized offshore operation service with increasingly sustainable practices, Ocyan has begun implementing Rig View 360º on one of its rigs – the first to feature the new system is the Norbe VIII. This would be the first ultra-deepwater drilling rig in the country to have a tool based on the “Google Street View” concept, capable of providing virtual and remote navigation throughout the internal area of the vessel.
The Rig View enables virtual ‘boarding’ of the unit without Ocyan team members having to face the entire logistical process of boarding, including mandatory training requirements and risks associated with exposure to the offshore industrial environment. “We identified that this mechanism would be useful and would bring excellent results by eliminating unnecessary travels. When we access the system, we can identify various situations from a distance. The virtual tour has proven advantageous and has multiple applications,” explains Fernanda Terra, a member of the operations team who coordinated the mapping work from the beginning.

The entire process took six months to be completed and was conducted by an internal Ocyan team in partnership with the startup Media Glass. According to Fillipe Eduardo Silva, then assistant to the rig manager, the main challenge of the project was to utilize an already existing technology that was applicable and feasible in a drilling rig environment in full operation. The system also needed to bring efficiency gains to the business and have a low implementation cost. “Although it is a relatively established technology in daily use, already explored in commercial and industrial business environments, there are not many options developed for the specificity of a drilling vessel. We needed to explore a truly useful tool that would bring real benefits, far beyond a (surprising) virtual visit,” he added.

Ocyan operates five drilling rigs, all contracted, and operates these assets with its own offshore crew, in addition to having client and supplier representatives onboard. The company also utilizes a whole technical and operational contingent allocated onshore, hundreds of kilometers away from the vessels, where operations occur at the wells. “The idea for Rig View 360º arose from a request made by the client, which could only be clarified in the field. The displacement of a person to verify the vessel’s area could be avoided if there was a realistic, reliable consultation tool that could provide a more sensitive spatial understanding than 2D photos,” explains Rodrigo Chamusca Machado, responsible for Technology and Innovation in Ocyan’s Drilling Business Unit.
Among the advantages of the new system are assistance in planning interventions onboard, support for the engineering team in modification projects, integration with new innovation systems, and assistance in investigations. Additionally, the use of the tool could reduce the number of boardings on the rig. “Today, 85% of the entire installation has been covered by the work, and the images are available for Ocyan. In addition to viewing, it is possible to take measurements of a certain space. In the future, as a continuation of the project, it will be possible to complement the remaining 15% or update any area that may eventually be modified. We are still progressing towards enabling the integration of equipment specifications with Rig View, which will allow technical consultations of various systems on the vessel using the tool,” Chamusca concludes.
