Bold Goal: Minimize Landfill Waste to Zero from Oil Company’s Business Activities
Rio de Janeiro, May 23, 2023 – Achieving impressive milestones in waste management, Ocyan, a giant in the oil and gas sector, reports a reuse rate of 96% of waste from its drilling rigs. With the implementation of the groundbreaking Zero Landfill project, the company has drastically reduced the environmental impact of its activities, as well as its ecological footprint. This will also be a topic for the operator at the FPSO Brazil Congress 2023.
At the forefront of the upstream oil and gas segment, Ocyan stood out in 2021 as one of the first companies to achieve such milestones. Advancing further in 2022, the company reduced the amount of waste sent to landfills by an astonishing 65% compared to 2021. This amounts to a total of 123 tons of waste directed to recycling.
The Ocyan Zero Landfill Project: A Green Innovation
The Zero Landfill Project is an innovation integrated into Ocyan, initially applied to the Drilling Business Unit. This initiative strengthens the company’s commitment to environmental and social issues, as well as its efforts to enhance the sustainability of its operations and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices in its management.

“This year, our main challenge was to restructure the waste management process in partnership with our service providers, realigning contracts to ensure adherence to our processes”, emphasizes Marco Aurélio Fonseca, Executive Vice President of Sustainability at Ocyan.
Ocyan’s Digital Path to Waste Reduction
The Zero Landfill initiative is accelerating the digitalization of Ocyan’s processes, such as the implementation of the Easy Check List, which replaces paper forms with checks made on tablets. “We are saving over a ton of paper per year, increasing our efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring greater reliability in data collection, storage, and control”, celebrates Fonseca.
The Reach of the Ocyan Zero Landfill Project
Created by Ocyan in 2018, the Zero Landfill project has gone through four phases of development and effective implementation. Ocyan sought partners capable of developing viable alternatives for dealing with common waste, beyond landfills.
With promising results, Ocyan continues to expand its impact, with some clients and service providers announcing plans to implement similar practices. “This makes us realize that, in addition to achieving our goal of reducing the environmental impact of our activities, we are positively influencing the market”, concludes Fonseca.
As the next step, Ocyan plans to expand Zero Landfill to all business units managed by the company by the end of 2023, with the goal of reusing 100% of waste and completely eliminating the disposal of waste in landfills across all its activities.
