UN Approves Expansion of Brazil’s Continental Shelf, Granting the Country the Right to Explore Another 360,000 km² of Territory at Sea. Area Equivalent to the Size of Germany.

The UN approved Brazil’s request to expand its continental shelf by another 360,000 km², an area equivalent to Germany. The decision allows the country to explore oil, gas, and other resources at sea, strengthening its sovereignty over the so-called “Blue Amazon.”

The new area lies between the states of Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte and goes beyond the current limit of 200 nautical miles. The proposal was analyzed by UN technicians and had the support of the Navy, Petrobras, and ANP.

The United Nations (UN) approved this week the request from Brazil to expand its continental shelf. The decision allows the country to have rights over an additional area of 360,000 square kilometers at sea.

This extra area is equivalent to the entire territory of Germany. Now, Brazil can explore riches such as oil, natural gas, and minerals that may be on the seabed in this new region.

The information was reported by G1 on Wednesday morning (27), and also confirmed by the portal Brasil 247. The new maritime strip is located in the so-called Equatorial Margin, between Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte.

The continental shelf is an extension of land territory under the sea. With the decision, Brazil will be able to utilize the natural resources of this area exclusively, as provided by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The request for expansion was made by Brazil in 2004 and has undergone several revisions over the years. The Brazilian Navy led the studies, with technical support from Petrobras and the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP).

According to Petrobras, the new geological studies were essential for the approval. The research showed that this region is a natural continuation of Brazilian territory.

Vice Admiral Marco Antônio Linhares Soares of the Navy explained to the website Política Brasileira that this achievement is significant because it gives the country access to many hidden riches in the seabed.

He also highlighted that this new area reinforces what we call “Blue Amazon,” a term used to represent all the maritime area under Brazil’s control. It is rich in biodiversity and has great economic value.

The expansion of the continental shelf also increases the country’s responsibility for the protection of the marine environment. Now, Brazil will have to take care of this new area, ensuring the safety and preservation of resources.

With this change, Brazil further enhances its presence in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Brasil 247, this represents a strategic advancement for the economy and national defense.

Furthermore, the UN’s decision reinforces international recognition of the studies conducted by Brazil. The country demonstrated its adherence to the technical and environmental criteria required by global treaties.

The expansion is also expected to attract new investments in the oil and gas sector. Companies interested in exploring this new region will need to adhere to environmental regulations and commitments to sustainable development.

According to Wikipedia, the Blue Amazon represents about 5.7 million km², and now that number will grow even larger. The idea is to combine nature protection with responsible use of marine riches.
