With Low International Demand for the Commodity, OPEC Announced an Increase in Oil Production to 432,000 Barrels per Day, Aiming to Elevate Supply and Overcome the Current Moment of the Global Market

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced last Thursday, (05/05), an increase in oil production worldwide. The organization has now set an elevation to 432,000 barrels per day by the associated countries, due to low international demand for the product. This strategy is aimed at expanding the supply of the commodity in the international market throughout the month of June.

Countries That Are Part of OPEC Will Increase Oil Production to 432,000 Barrels per Day During June to Offset Demand Deficit for the Commodity

During Thursday’s meeting with the countries that are part of the organization, OPEC announced to the global market that it will increase oil production to 432,000 barrels per day in June. This is happening as a way to address the low demand for the product and encourage an increase in the supply of the commodity within the international market, so that companies can refocus on the resource.

The organization emphasized that the decision to increase oil production was made after a thorough observation of the “ongoing effects of geopolitical factors and pandemic-related issues.” In this regard, there have been several events that lowered demand for the commodity in recent months, and OPEC needs to reverse the situation. This was the second increase in 2022, as the organization had previously raised production by 432,000 barrels per day, following a series of increases of 400,000 barrels per day in the last months of 2021.

Finally, OPEC discussed with the countries that are part of the organization to ensure compliance with production and strong investment in new incentives for boosting this chain. As a result, nations will need to maintain the strategy of increasing the supply of the commodity until the end of next month, following OPEC’s guidelines. Furthermore, the organization announced a forthcoming meeting for early June to discuss future scenarios regarding oil production and the global market.

Geopolitical Issues Caused a Decline in Demand for Oil and an Increase in Commodity Production and Supply May Reverse the Situation

The last increase in oil production by OPEC had already been made due to the international geopolitical scenario during March. Thus, the increment to 432,000 barrels per day this month happened in response to weak Chinese demand for the commodity. This was because the country was undergoing new lockdowns and market closures due to internal problems, but gradually the nation is recovering.

Now, the decision for a new increase in oil production came in light of the ban imposed last Wednesday on Russian oil imports within six months and refined products of the commodity by the end of the year. Thus, economic sanctions are causing even more uncertainty within OPEC regarding supply and demand for oil in the global market during the upcoming months of the year.

Therefore, although the organization continues to try to implement strategies to reverse the situation, the countries that are part of OPEC still need to follow risk recommendations so that the supply of the commodity does not continue as the current scenario. However, the cartel is optimistic about the plan to increase oil production next month.
