The largest gaming event in the world, gamescom latam will be held for the first time in Latin America, with Brazil as the host country. During the days of June 26 to 30, at São Paulo Expo, game creators and developers will have the opportunity to interact, showcase their games to the public, and establish valuable networking for an industry that continues to grow and is expected to reach the figure of US$ 321 billion by 2026 worldwide, according to consulting firm PwC.
Brazil is the largest Latin American gaming market and considered the 5th in online population, with an estimated 103 million players. According to the Game Brasil 2022 report, 74.5% of Brazilians are avid gamers, and the sector generates R$12 billion annually in the country.
In an effort to promote business and bring closer some hubs of excellence in game development, the Brazilian Association of Game Developers (Abragames) invited specialists from various parts of the world to participate in panels during gamescom latam. Among the guests are two representatives from Finland, a country that is among the five largest gaming industries in Europe and a leading developer of mobile games.

This is the second time Suvi Kiviniemi, head of the LGIN game incubator at the Metropolitan University of Applied Sciences, visits Brazil to talk about her experience in the gaming industry. She has been in this market for 12 years and notes that she is excited to participate in gamescom latam, where she will collaborate on two panels. “My first panel is about incubator and accelerator projects in the gaming sector and how they can help projects and startups, and the second is about practical actions to increase diversity. This is still a field very dominated by men, and other aspects of diversity also need improvement – still, we are heading in the right direction, and good initiatives are happening around the world.”
Regarding the Brazilian market, Suvi comments that she has noticed the government support in the country and celebrates the proximity to Finland. “Finland and Brazil have a lot of potential for further collaboration, and to build this, it is important to understand different viewpoints. Developers need to know other people and cultures so that the work culture of our industry can be open and fruitful, and the games we make and the stories we tell can represent everyone. Games are everywhere and are for everyone,” she states.
The chief advisor for Neogames and executive director of the European Game Developers Federation, Jari-Pekka Kaleva will be in Brazil for the first time. He says he comes seeking to strengthen relationships with the Brazilian and Latin American gaming market, as well as to build connections and encourage European companies to venture into the promising gaming market in Brazil. “This is the first time that gamescom is being organized in Latin America and, for me, it is the beginning of a long partnership between the Brazilian, Latin American, and European industries,” he asserts.
Highlighting the Finnish gaming market, Jari-Pekka emphasizes the Nordic country’s search for recruiting new talents and incentives that strengthen the local industry, showcasing it worldwide and generating opportunities. “Access to high-level global talent has been the biggest challenge for industry growth, which is why the Finnish government has invested in technology and innovation and ensured that immigration processes are faster,” he points out.
A promising destination for Brazilian talents and startups abroad, the Finnish gaming market generated around €3.2 billion in 2021 (NeoGames), a record amount that was maintained in 2022. Finnish mobile games have been taking the world by storm. The Nordic country is also the 13th most favorable emerging ecosystem for startups, according to the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2023; thus, Work in Finland and Business Finland have been exploring opportunities in the country.
“Finland aims to become even more competitive globally, so it is attracting innovative Brazilian talents and startups. The country invests in startup acceleration programs, events for entrepreneurs and talents, and has a supportive ecosystem for international talent,” explains Alessandra Leone, Talent Manager at Business Finland.
