Suriname To Distribute Oil Profits From The Equatorial Margin: Each Inhabitant Will Receive An Annual Benefit

The President of Suriname, Chan Santokhi, announced an ambitious program called “Benefits for All,” which aims to redistribute the profits from the oil reserves discovered in the Equatorial Margin. Every Surinamese citizen will benefit from this plan, receiving an initial payment of 750 dollars (around 4,300 reais), with an annual yield of 7%. The announcement, made during the celebration of Independence Day, marks a milestone in the country’s economic policy.

An Inclusive Approach To Oil Profits

The initiative, which will be financed with revenues from the oil exploration in the “Block 58,” aims to ensure that the country’s natural resources directly benefit the population. According to Santokhi, this program represents a new phase in the management of national resources. “Every Surinamese is a co-owner of the oil profits. It is time to give something back to the people, and we will do this fairly,” he stated.

The government is finalizing the details to implement the program as soon as oil production in Block 58, led by TotalEnergies, begins operations in 2028. Additionally, measures are being evaluated to expedite payments to individuals over 60 years old and citizens with disabilities, prioritizing their access to benefits.

The Equatorial Margin has consolidated itself as a strategic area for oil and gas exploration in South America. Suriname, like other countries in the region, has attracted the interest of international oil giants. In October, TotalEnergies announced an investment of 10.5 billion dollars to develop Block 58, with offshore production expected to begin in 2028.

The “Benefits for All” program seeks to improve the quality of life for citizens, and also position the Suriname as a model for equitable redistribution of revenues from natural resources. This approach differs from other countries in the region, where oil wealth has primarily been managed by states or large corporations.
