The Century-Old Locomotive Travels Historic Tracks Between Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Crossing Mountains and a Tunnel That Was the Scene of Battles in 1932, Uniting Memory, Nature, and Culture in One of the Most Exciting Train Rides in Brazil.

One of Brazil’s most emblematic train journeys reconnects tourists and locals to the memory of the Constitutional Revolution of 1932.

Operated by the Brazilian Association of Railway Preservation (ABPF), the Serra da Mantiqueira Train covers a stretch of 10 km between the city of Passa Quatro, in Minas Gerais, and the historic Mantiqueira Tunnel, at the border with São Paulo.

The ride is made in century-old locomotives and restored carriages, with regular journeys on weekends and holidays.

The attraction offers a unique immersion into the past, combining landscapes of the Serra da Mantiqueira with historical accounts of the tunnel’s role in one of the most significant conflicts of the 20th century in Brazil.

Mantiqueira Tunnel: From Railway Connection to Battlefield

Inaugurated in 1884, in the presence of Dom Pedro II, the Mantiqueira Tunnel was part of the old Minas & Rio Railroad.

The engineering work marked the railway connection between states that are important to the country’s economy.

Decades later, during the Revolution of 1932, the site transformed into a battlefield.

The conflict, fought between Paulista troops and the provisional government of Getúlio Vargas, had the tunnel as a strategic point.

The Paulistas positioned a locomotive as a barricade to prevent federal advancement.

The clashes were intense, and the region became known as “Tunnel of Heroes,” in honor of the fallen combatants.

Serra da Mantiqueira Offers a Journey Through Time with Natural Scenery and Preserved Memory

Currently, the railway ride to the tunnel is one of the main tourist attractions in Passa Quatro.

The carriages are decorated with period items, and during the trip, uniformed guides reconstitute historical events with detailed narratives.

At the stop inside the tunnel, visitors are invited to walk through the dark interior, where plaques and images pay tribute to the soldiers involved in the Revolution.

In addition to its historical significance, the ride is surrounded by natural beauty.

The train crosses preserved Atlantic Forest, borders crystal-clear rivers, and reveals panoramic views of the mountain range.

It’s an experience that combines nature, memory, and education.

The ride lasts approximately 1.5 hours, with boarding and disembarkation at the central station in Passa Quatro.

Tickets cost between R$ 40 and R$ 80, depending on the category and age, and can be purchased in advance on the official ABPF website.

ABPF Keeps Brazilian Railway Memory Alive

The restoration of the line and locomotives was made possible by the ABPF, which has been working for over three decades to preserve Brazil’s railway heritage.

The association is also responsible for other tourist routes in the country, such as in Campinas (SP), São João del-Rei (MG), and Curitiba (PR).

According to the entity, there is an ongoing project to reconnect the stretch from Passa Quatro to the city of Cruzeiro (SP), which also has historical railway infrastructure.

The proposal includes the reactivation of about 12 km of currently inactive tracks, including bridges, tunnels, and abandoned stations.

The city of Cruzeiro also houses the other side of the Mantiqueira Tunnel and was the scene of intense movements during the Revolution of 1932.

The integration between the two cities could expand the tourist reach and create a new interstate historical circuit.

Beyond the Ride in the Serra da Mantiqueira: Cultural Activities and Infrastructure for Tourists in Passa Quatro

Beyond the regular ride, Passa Quatro hosts annual themed events related to the Revolution, such as reenactments of battles, exhibitions, and fairs for local products.

During the celebrations on July 9, a symbolic date marking the beginning of the Paulista revolt, the train becomes a stage for tributes and cultural performances.

Visitors can also find in the city the Memorial of the 1932 Revolution, a small museum that preserves uniforms, documents, weapons, and accounts of local combatants.

The collection is maintained by volunteers and helps keep alive the memory of that period.

Other attractions in Passa Quatro include ecological trails, viewpoints, waterfalls, and historical farms open for visitation.

The city is part of the tourist circuit “Caminhos da Mantiqueira” and has invested in infrastructure to welcome tourists, with inns and restaurants that celebrate Minas Gerais culture.

The union of tourism, history, and railway preservation makes the Serra da Mantiqueira Train one of the most authentic experiences in Brazil.

By reliving the journey to the Tunnel of Heroes, passengers not only enjoy rare landscapes but also traverse one of the most emblematic chapters of national history.

What other historical stretch of Brazilian railways would you like to see reactivated in the coming years?

Os “heróis” foram os mineiros que defenderam o ditador Getúlio Vargas.
