In October and November, the Average Monthly Production of Gasoline and Diesel at Petrobras Refineries Increased After the Completion of Maintenance
In the fourth quarter of 2021, Petrobras increased its monthly gasoline production by 17% compared to the second quarter, while diesel production rose by 8% during the same period. The increase was due to the completion of preventive maintenance shutdowns at the refineries, which had a budget of R$ 2 billion this year, as Petrobras reported in a statement to Reuters last Tuesday, December 7.

“The shutdowns were concentrated in the second quarter of 2021, with some actions still in the third quarter. After the completion of the maintenance campaigns, Petrobras resumed a high level of fuel production”, stated Petrobras’ announcement.
As a result, the refining utilization factor at Petrobras finished November at 87% of capacity, 12 percentage points higher than in the second quarter.

In total, according to Petrobras, more than 4,000 pieces of equipment were inspected during the maintenance shutdowns at all of the company’s refineries.
“The main objective of the investment is to ensure safety and operational continuity, as well as to adjust the production capacities of the units and promote improvements in the facilities”, Petrobras stated.
More Efficient Asset Utilization
Petrobras also stated that “it always seeks the most efficient use of its assets, and processing levels may fluctuate depending on equipment availability, operational cost-effectiveness, and customer service”.
“The processing level of the refineries is planned based on the availability and types of oil, the capacity of the refineries and logistical assets, as well as demand forecasts. Based on technical criteria, the system points to the solution with the best economic results for the entire complex.”
Petrobras disclosed in its Strategic Plan 2022-2026 that it will invest a total of US$ 6.1 billion in refining by 2026.
Petrobras also stated that it will develop projects to place the company among the most reputable refiners in the world, in terms of efficiency and operational performance, with higher value-added products and lower carbon emissions. An example of this commitment is the expansion of production capacity, mainly for high-quality derivatives such as S-10 diesel.
Petrobras’ project includes significant expansion plans, including the completion of the second refining unit at the Abreu e Lima Refinery (Rnest), which is expected to increase S-10 diesel production capacity by 95 thousand barrels per day.
Additionally, Petrobras plans to integrate the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) with GasLub Itaboraí, increasing the capacity of 93 thousand barrels per day of S-10 diesel and aviation kerosene (QAV) and 12 thousand barrels per day of higher quality lubricants; a new unit at Replan, as well as making adaptations at Reduc and Revap, adding a capacity of 132 thousand barrels per day of S-10 diesel at the three refineries.
