Rock Laboratory, Using Equipment the Size of Cenpes, Expands Its Service Portfolio and Processing Volume, Increasing Operational Efficiency in Exploration and Production.
Petrobras has just inaugurated the new facilities in Macaé, expanding its service capacity and investing in more operational efficiency. The Rock and Fluid laboratories now feature new equipment similar to that used at Petrobras Research Center (Cenpes), becoming a reference in Latin America. From Macaé, both will support a large part of the activities in the area for the entire company, reinforcing the company’s commitment to excellence in its operations.
With the inauguration of the facilities, Petrobras reinforces its commitment to innovation and quality, expanding its operations and consolidating its position as a reference in the Exploration and Production segment. The launch of the facilities in Macaé marks a new milestone for the company, which continues to invest in state-of-the-art infrastructure to maintain its prominent position in the market.
Inauguration of the New Rock and Fluid Laboratory Facilities
The Rock Laboratory’s main activity is to assess the quality of oil reservoirs through the study of rock samples taken from wells. To that end, cutting-edge technologies are now part of the new facility in Macaé, such as those used at Cenpes. CT scanners, MRI machines, and electron microscopes are some of the new equipment that will allow for enhanced analytical capacity, providing more safety and preparing the new laboratory to serve this function for the entire company.

Opening of the New Rock and Fluid Laboratory Facilities
Marcelo de Almeida, the laboratory coordinator, discusses the optimization of this service. ‘The company previously had eight rock laboratories in different regions. Over time, it was found that centralization allows for optimized support to the units, and thus, Macaé was chosen to concentrate this work, which also takes place in another smaller facility in Bahia and at Cenpes itself’, he explained.

The Fluid Laboratory, in order to provide operational and maintenance support for segments of the company, conducts chemical, physicochemical, and microbiological analyses on oil, natural gas, and other derivatives. The new space houses state-of-the-art equipment, allowing not only for service enhancement but also for expanded capacity to meet new demands. ‘The surveys we conduct on samples allow us to understand the composition of the oil from a well, the gasoline produced, and the gas extracted. Based on this, a series of decisions can be made, even the definition of royalties to be allocated to a municipality, for example’, says the manager of the Fluid Laboratory, Keyla Sarges.

The facilities are located in a building at the Imboassica Base, with a constructed area of about 12,000 m². The location includes an electric substation, central air conditioning system, power generator, rainwater collection system, sanitary appliances, and a photovoltaic system. Both were previously located at the Imbetiba Base.

Analyses of rocks from well drilling and the fluids from oil and its derivatives are fundamental steps for Petrobras’s business. In this context, the centralization process of these two types of services aligns with the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan and the Campos Basin Renewal Plan. It also materializes the investment in operational efficiency, linked to the commitment to sustainability and a fair energy transition. The Campos Basin Renewal Plan anticipates an investment of US$ 22 billion by 2028, with over 200 new interconnected wells, in addition to four new FPSOs (floating systems that produce, store, and transfer oil).
