The Union of the Dutch Specialist in Geographical Research with the State Oil Company Strongly Contributed to the National Submarine Sector. The Fugro Project with Petrobras Used an ROV on the Fugro Aquarius for Greater Efficiency in Operations.
The Dutch inspection specialist Fugro and the giant of the national oil market Petrobras are united in yet another innovative project. This involves a research and underwater inspection activity carried out on the Brazilian coast by the companies. The Dutch used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operated from a control center in Aberdeen, Scotland, ensuring even more modernity for the activity in national territory.
Petrobras Joins Dutch Fugro to Develop Research and Underwater Inspection Project on the Brazilian Coast, Aiming for Sustainability in Its Activities
The national maritime market is increasingly interested in the sustainability practices outlined in the global environmental agenda. Brazil’s largest oil company is also keeping an eye on this segment.
Now, Petrobras has teamed up with Dutch Fugro for the first underwater inspection and research project conducted with a remotely operated vehicle, an ROV vessel.

The team at the office piloted the ROV from a control center in Aberdeen, Scotland, instead of on the ship. This feature reinforces the investments of Fugro and Petrobras in modernization and technology in the national submarine sector.
The research and inspection project was carried out under the terms of a multi-year contract between the two companies. The goal of the state oil company is to minimize risks and improve sustainability during inspection, repair, and maintenance (IRM) projects.
“This historic project represents a significant achievement in our ongoing work with Petrobras to support safer and more sustainable offshore energy production in Brazil,” said John Chatten, business development manager for Fugro’s marine operations in Brazil.
The Dutch company provided the national oil company with all its cutting-edge technology with the ROV to ensure the best use of the vessel in inspecting the Brazilian coast during the operation.
Petrobras has been standing out in investments in sustainability in its operations over the past few years. Now, under the leadership of Jean Paul Prates, what is expected is for the scenario to continue advancing.
The Fugro Underwater Inspection and Research Project with the State Company on the Brazilian Coast Reinforces the Presence of the Dutch Company in the National Maritime Market
Fugro has established itself as one of the largest underwater service companies in the Brazilian market in recent years.
“As the leading ROV service provider in the country, we expect to implement this approach in future research and bring additional remote and autonomous innovations to the region,” said the company.
In addition to the underwater research and inspection project on the Brazilian coast with Petrobras, the Dutch company completed its first fully remote offshore integrity inspection campaign in January.
This was carried out using the uncrewed vessel Fugro Orca Blue Essence (USV) with the electric ROV Blue Volta, driving technology in the operation.
Over the next few years, what is expected is for Petrobras to continue investing in underwater research and inspection following the project with Fugro.
