Petrobras Made The Largest Gas Discovery In The Country’s History, Potentially Tripling Reserves And Moving Billions. Production Has A Date To Begin And Change The Energy Market.
The Petrobras confirmed a historic natural gas discovery in Colombia, reinforcing its commitment to exploring new energy frontiers.
The Sirius-2 well, located in the offshore block GUA-OFF-0, showed remarkable productivity, raising expectations for gas production in the country.
The formation tests, conducted 31 km off the coast and at a depth of 804 meters, analyzed a reservoir of approximately 100 meters in thickness, revealing impressive volumetric potential.

Larger than entire cities in Brazil: BYD is building a 4.6 km² complex in Bahia with a capacity for 600,000 vehicles per year, but the discovery of 163 workers in conditions analogous to slavery has shaken the entire project.
The discovery is considered the largest in Colombia’s history and estimates volumes exceeding 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas in place.
This amount could triple Colombia’s current gas reserves, representing a significant leap for the country’s energy sector.
Billion-Dollar Investments and Production Plans
The consortium responsible for the discovery is formed by Petrobras (44.44%) and Ecopetrol (55.56%), two giants in the oil sector.
The partnership aims to invest US$ 1.2 billion in the exploratory phase and US$ 2.9 billion in production development, consolidating the companies’ presence in the region.
The expectation is to start gas extraction within three years, after obtaining environmental licenses and confirming commercial viability, expected by 2027.
According to Petrobras, the estimated production is 13 million cubic meters per day for a decade, using an innovative transportation system called “subsea to shore”, which allows for direct flow from the seabed to the coast, reducing costs and environmental impacts.
Commitment to Safety and Energy Transition
Petrobras emphasized that this discovery aligns with its long-term strategy, which prioritizes the exploration of new frontiers and international partnerships to ensure energy security during the transition to more sustainable sources.
The state-owned company also highlighted its commitment to safe and sustainable practices, respecting local communities and Colombia’s legal requirements.
With the confirmation of the gas potential in the region, the consortium will initiate the necessary socio-environmental and licensing processes for transporting the gas to consumer centers.
The samples collected during the tests will still undergo detailed laboratory analyses, while the results of drilling the Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 wells will continue to be evaluated.
Petrobras’ Exit from the Distribution Sector in Colombia
Alongside the discovery, Petrobras announced the completion of the sale of Petrobras Colombia Combustibles (PECOCO), a subsidiary responsible for the distribution and transportation of fuels in the country.
The decision, approved by the company’s executive board, is part of the strategy to diversify the portfolio and preserve the company’s essential assets.
PECOCO was responsible for operating fuel stations, transportation infrastructure, and distribution bases in the main Colombian markets.
With this strategic move, Petrobras is now focusing on exploring and producing gas and oil, strengthening its operations in higher value-added segments.
Economic Impact and Perspectives
The discovery of the gas reservoir in Colombia could significantly boost the country’s economy, becoming a key element for the region’s energy security.
The possibility of tripling gas reserves also opens the door for new investments in the sector, expanding Colombia’s participation in the global energy market.
For Petrobras, this international expansion reinforces its position as one of the major players in the sector, while adapting to the new demands of the global energy transition.
According to the company, operations will follow a strict environmental protocol, ensuring operational safety and sustainability in the region’s development.
International Expansion and Strengthening Petrobras
In recent years, Petrobras has been reinforcing its presence in foreign markets, seeking to diversify its revenue sources and increase its global competitiveness.
The exploration of gas in Colombia is part of this strategy, aligned with the growing need for sustainable energy alternatives.
With technological advancements and management focused on efficiency, the company continues to stand out as one of the leading oil companies in the world.
