Northeast: There Are Chances That Petrobras Will Invest Again in Ceará, Maranhão, and Rio Grande do Norte If New Wells With High Extraction Potential Are Found.
Hope for the Northeast. Petrobras is considering resuming deep-water exploration in the Potiguar Basin in 2023. The reason for the resumption would be the drilling of a new well, which will define the discovery of Pitu. It is worth noting that the state-owned company has five blocks in deep water in the same region. The delimitation of the discovery of Pitu is in a more advanced phase of exploration, with two wells drilled. It is important to remember that the discovery of Pitu was made in 2013 and confirmed by a second drilling two years later. The project was contracted in a round in 2005, through a consortium formed by Petrobras, BP, and Petrogal.

Exploration in Ceará
Another good piece of news given last month by the director of Institutional Relations of the state-owned company, Roberto Ardenghy, in an interview with Estadão/Broadcast, is that Petrobras could make new investments in the Northeast.
The executive mentioned chances that Petrobras might invest again in Ceará, Maranhão, and Rio Grande do Norte if new wells with high extraction potential are found.
“If we can confirm expectations in the Potiguar, Ceará-Maranhão basins, on the equatorial margin, where Petrobras is conducting geological work, we will go back. We have no issues. In Brazil, 94% of the basins still need to be evaluated for the occurrence of oil. So, there is a great opportunity”, said Ardenghy.
Reflecting this divestment plan of Petrobras, the oil wells in Fazenda Belém and Icapuí will begin a new phase of exploration in the first half of 2021, by the new owner of the area, 3R Petroleum. Daily production at the site is about 803 barrels according to Petrobras data.
However, Bruno Iughetti projected that new investments by Petrobras in Ceará – Northeast would be unlikely. According to him, the state-owned company has already conducted studies in the local basins and found no wells with potential to justify the investments.
“I would say that’s thinking too positively. Studies have already been carried out here by Petrobras, and they did not find any oil field that could economically benefit Ceará, so I think that’s not a fact”, he said.
