Hope for the Northeast. Petrobras is considering restarting exploration in deep waters of the Potiguar Basin in 2023. The reason for the resumption would be the drilling of a new well, which will delimit the Pitu discovery. It is worth mentioning that the state-owned company has five blocks in deep waters in the same region. The delimitation of the Pitu discovery is at a more advanced stage of exploration and with two wells drilled. Remembering that the Pitu discovery was made in 2013 and confirmed by a second drilling two years later. The project was contracted in a round in 2005, through a consortium formed by Petrobras, BP and Petrogal.

On land and shallow waters, Petrobras wants to dispose of assets in the state. 26 fields are offered, in addition to the industrial center of Guamaré, which includes a UPGN and the Potiguar Clara Camarão Refinery

Exploration in Ceará

Another piece of good news given last month by the director of Institutional Relations for the state-owned company, Roberto Ardenghy, in an interview with Estadão/Broadcast, is that Petrobras could make new investments in the Northeast.

The executive mentioned the chances of Petrobras returning to invest in Ceará, Maranhão and Rio Grande do Norte, if new wells with great extraction potential are found.

“If we manage to confirm expectations in the Potiguar, Ceará-Maranhão basins, on the equatorial margin, where Petrobras does geological work, we will return. We don't have any problems. In Brazil, 94% of basins have yet to be assessed for oil occurrence. So there's a huge opportunity,” Ardenghy said.

As a reflection of this Petrobras divestment plan, the oil wells at Fazenda Belém and Icapuí will begin a new exploration phase in the first half of 2021, by the new owner of the area, 3R Petroleum. Daily production at the site is around 803 barrels, according to Petrobras data.

However, Bruno Iughetti projected that new investments by Petrobras in Ceará – Northeast would be unlikely. According to him, the state-owned company has already carried out studies in the local basins and has not found wells with the potential to justify the investments.

“I would say it's thinking too positively. Studies have already been carried out here by Petrobras and it did not find any field of oil that could favor economically here in Ceará, so I think that is not true”, he said.
