BRL 100 Billion Will Be Invested in a New Green Hydrogen Project in Piauí. The State Remains a Leader in Brazil in Projects Related to the Fuel of the Future.
Governor Rafael Fonteles announced last Saturday (2) the start date of the largest green hydrogen project in Piauí. The groundbreaking for the hydrogen production unit will take place on the 15th of this month. The decision was made during a meeting in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, where the manager attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 28.
Green Hydrogen Project in Piauí Will Receive Billion-Dollar Investment
According to Rafael Fonteles, it is a very important investment, the largest in the state’s history. This is expected to exceed BRL 100 billion in investments over the next 10 years. A great opportunity for job and income generation for the Piauí people. The green hydrogen production unit will be installed in the Export Processing Zone (ZPE) of Parnaíba.
The governor explained that the project will be developed in stages over the coming years. From an environmental perspective, it will have global repercussions. Fonteles adds that this initiative is Piauí collaborating with the global energy transition and, in this way, contributing to environmental preservation and addressing climate change.

The governor’s efforts during international missions are considered essential for securing investments for the production of the fuel of the future in Piauí territory. Recently, the Government of Piauí granted a preliminary environmental license for the installation of the Green Hydrogen Production Park in the ZPE of Parnaíba.
An installation of a solar plant was also approved. In total, outside companies plan to invest more than BRL 100 billion in the ventures. Rafael highlighted that December will be marked by two historic events. In addition to the start of the green hydrogen project, there will be the inauguration of the first phase of the Port of Luís Correia, a long-awaited project that will be delivered to the public on the 13th.
Over 10,000 Jobs Will Be Created by 2027
By the year 2027, the projects related to green hydrogen production in Piauí will create at least 10,000 jobs in the state. The projection was made by Victor Hugo Almeida, president of Investe Piauí. By 2035, it is expected that more than 60,000 jobs will be created.
According to Victor Hugo Almeida, the State Government hired two international institutions with specialists in the field to assess the impact of the investment, both on job creation and on the Piauí economy.
According to Almeida, two researchers were hired, in fact, two institutions, that are working with Investe Piauí studying the whole economic sector of green hydrogen in Piauí so that the numbers are more accurate.
However, we are talking about thousands of jobs that will be generated throughout this chain, in the construction phase and, obviously, there will also be the operation phase. So, there will also be qualified jobs; there is demand for engineers, so this will also create a significant salary mass for the state of Piauí.
Another Green Hydrogen Project in Piauí with Capacity for 10 GW
The European Union plans to financially support the construction of one of the largest green hydrogen plants in the world in Parnaíba, a city in Piauí. The announcement was made at the beginning of the week by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. According to her, the support for the green hydrogen plant in Piauí is part of a total investment of 2 billion euros, equivalent to approximately BRL 10.7 billion in direct conversion.
The new plant, according to Ursula, will have a production capacity of 10 GW of clean hydrogen and ammonia. It is worth noting that green hydrogen gets its name from being obtained through clean energies, being one of the main bets for the energy transition.
