The security intelligence company Dryad Global said that 11 crew members of the FPSO (Floating Storage and Offloading Unit) were suspected of being kidnapped. The incident was confirmed by BW Offshore, the owner of the production platform.

“On July 2, 2020, at approximately 04:20 local time, the BW Offshore Sendje Berge FPSO was subject to a pirate attack off the coast of Nigeria, in which nine Nigerians were kidnapped,” the company said.
“The incident aboard the FPSO ended and none of those who remained aboard suffered physical injuries.”

BW Offshore added that it was cooperating with local authorities, represented on-site by the Nigerian Navy.
The Sendje Berge is located in the Okwori field in Nigeria, under contract with Addax Petroleum.
“It is assessed that this attack is unique within the broader scope of offshore incidents in West Africa. Both the method of attack and the target are beyond the usual methodology of targeting and attacks by pirate action groups in Nigeria. Reports indicate that explosives were used during the attack,” Dryad said.
“This latest attack brings the total number of people kidnapped in maritime incidents in West Africa to 74 in 2020. Kidnapping reports in 2020 are currently 51% higher than in 2019 during the same period.”
