A new market niche is forming. With the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a stream of opportunities seems to be arising for shipyards: to receive the units that will be laid up during the period of reduced operations
After Splenda Offshore, administrator of the Angra dos Reis Port Terminal (TPAR), received on the last day 15, for maintenance and cleaning services of tanks, the flotel platform POSH Xanadu owned by Pach Offshore Services Holdings (POSH), it was now BW Offshore’s turn to announce that it is also looking for a shipyard to receive its FPSO Cidade de São Vicente for lay up.

The FPSO Cidade de São Vicente will have its contract with Petrobras concluded next month (in June), but it will be kept in the country after its decommissioning in the Farfan area, in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin. This information was provided by the company’s Asset Manager, Weverton Nazario, during a webinar held by Firjan.
The platform has been under Long Duration Test (LDT) contracts with Petrobras since 2009 and the company’s intention is to allocate the FPSO to a upcoming contract in Brazil, and in the meantime, it has already started searching for a shipyard where it can stay in lay up and carry out maintenance work, which previous contracts did not allow during this period.
BW Offshore Has New Strategy
With the crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic that impacted the entire oil industry and caused oil prices to plummet, BW Offshore decided to prioritize the FPSO operations area and set aside its extraction and production projects for a while. The company is focusing on contracts with Petrobras and is considering bidding for Petrobras’ chartering of the Itapu unit, in the Santos cluster, and for the tenders (to be released) for Búzios VI and for a number of other production units.
In Brazil, BW Offshore will lose its only contract with Petrobras, but its portfolio still includes the FPSO Polvo, under contract with PetroRio, and the operation service of the FPSO Peregrino for Equinor.
