In Paraná, Solar Panels Replace Crops in Rural Areas, Boost Clean Energy Generation, and Increase Producers’ Income in the State’s Interior.
Paraná consolidates its prominent position in solar energy, boosting the rural economy and promoting sustainability with the increasing use of solar panels. The state already ranks third in the national solar energy production ranking, accounting for 8.7% of the country’s generation, behind only São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
This expansion is the result of investment in solar power plants, especially in northwestern Paraná, which has become an important hub for this renewable source, generating billions of reais and thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
Solar Panels Transform Rural Properties and Increase Producers’ Income
In Paranavaí, in northwestern Paraná, areas previously dedicated to agriculture and livestock are being converted for the installation of thousands of solar panels.

Minas Gerais reaches a historic record and surpasses the power of Itaipu, but network costs generate debate: Understand why solar energy in MG impacts the electricity bill of those without panels.
The rural producer Mauro Dias Lima exemplifies this transformation: by opting to lease his land for solar power plants, he diversified his family’s income and utilized the land in an innovative way.
“For us, landowners, it’s one more leasing option, in addition to cattle, sugarcane, soy, and cassava. The opportunity arose to ‘plant’ solar panels,” says Mauro.
This trend has been repeated in various regions of the state, especially in rural areas, where the Paraná Renewable Rural Energy program (Renova-PR) has encouraged small and medium producers to adopt solar energy, contributing to the reduction of electricity costs and the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
Factors Driving the Growth of Solar Energy in Paraná
The success of Paraná in solar energy generation is linked to favorable climatic conditions, high solar radiation incidence, and adequate infrastructure for energy distribution.
According to Liciany Ribeiro, Executive Director of the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar), the concentration of power plants in the northwestern part of the state is due to their proximity to distribution networks and the favorable climate, ensuring more accessible energy at a reduced cost for the end consumer.
Since 2012, investments in solar energy in Paraná have exceeded R$ 15 billion, generating over 99,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The sector has proven to be a viable economic alternative for rural producers, who, in addition to diversifying their income sources, reduce their electricity costs. Mauro Dias Lima emphasizes that “it’s worth it. It’s a new way to utilize the land and generate income.”
With this scenario, Paraná reaffirms its role as a protagonist in Brazil’s energy transition, showing that solar panels are more than just technology: they represent a real opportunity for economic, social, and environmental development for the state.
