Taller Bridge Than the Eiffel Tower Has Over 20 Years and Significantly Contributes to Sustainability. Bridge That Surpasses the Eiffel Tower Has 343 Meters in Height and Uses More Than 205 Thousand Tons of Concrete.

The Millau Viaduct, located in France, is a bridge that stands 343 meters tall, making it the highest in the world. Its impressive structure makes it a taller bridge than the Eiffel Tower and, despite being considered a remarkable feat of civil engineering, it has avoided more CO2 emissions than it has generated. Discover the bridge that surpasses the Eiffel Tower.

Bridge With 343 Meters Uses 205 Thousand Tons of Concrete

In December, the bridge taller than the Eiffel Tower and two kilometers long celebrated its 20th anniversary. However, in addition to its enormous size, it also impacts the decarbonization of the planet.

To start, the construction of the bridge that surpasses the Eiffel Tower used prefabricated structural components off-site, which mitigated the impact on local biodiversity, as well as reduced CO2 emissions from transportation and operations.

On the other hand, the construction of a project of this scale, which uses 205 thousand tons of concrete and 65 thousand tons of steel, not counting maintenance, generated a total emission of 1400 kg of carbon.

However, its efficiency seems to offset this carbon footprint. This occurs because, by providing a shorter route for vehicles, with fast traffic and less congestion, the bridge with 343 meters reduces approximately 40 thousand tons of CO2 emissions per year.

This considers only heavy vehicles. Thus, this number is equivalent to the same amount of CO2 absorbed by 40 thousand trees over four decades.

The method for calculating these data has not been disclosed, but Florimond Gueniat, an academic expert in clean energy and transportation, agrees with the estimate. In an article published in The Conversation, he suggested that the overall emissions savings amount to approximately 25 thousand tons annually.

Millau Viaduct Surpasses the Eiffel Tower and Is Capable of Reducing Emissions by Up to 25%

Furthermore, research indicated that alleviating congestion on the bridge with 343 meters can reduce emissions by up to 25%. This happens because maintaining a constant speed avoids fuel consumption due to frequent acceleration and deceleration.

So, even though better travel conditions might encourage more people to drive, increasing pollutant emissions, the bridge taller than the Eiffel Tower is still beneficial, considering that freight vehicles would make the trip under any conditions.

The viaduct on the A75 highway connecting Paris to Montpellier in France, as well as Barcelona, cuts six kilometers off the journey. Before the construction of this section of the bridge that surpasses the Eiffel Tower, travelers had to take a winding route through the Tarn Valley and the town of Millau. Additionally, some larger trucks took a different route through Lyon, to the east, adding over 60 km to a trip to the southern coast.

Bridge With 343 Meters Also Eases Traffic

Before the construction of the viaduct, Millau was the main bottleneck on the French north-south road and suffered from severe congestion. The bridge taller than the Eiffel Tower alleviated this congestion.

By applying the 25% reduction factor to the reduced emissions over the 26 km distance of the most affected area, it is possible to estimate the additional emissions savings attributable to improved traffic flow: several thousand tons of CO2 annually.

However, even though the numbers in this article are rough estimates, it seems clear that the emissions savings from the straighter and easier journey of the bridge have easily compensated for the carbon emissions used to construct and maintain the project.

Questionamentos a publicação:

Atenciosamente,
