OpenAI and Sur Energy Announce Investment of US$ 25 Billion to Build the First Stargate in Latin America in Argentina, a 500 MW Data Center for the Next Generation of Sustainable Artificial Intelligence
The advancement of artificial intelligence gains new momentum in Latin America. OpenAI and Sur Energy announced on Friday (10) the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) to build the first Stargate on the continent, in Argentina. The project envisions a data center of up to 500 megawatts, fully prepared for the next generation of AI and powered by sustainable energy.
The total investment is estimated at US$ 25 billion, with execution by Sur Energy in partnership with a major cloud infrastructure company.
Data Center Focused on Efficiency and Sustainability
Sur Energy will be responsible for the implementation and management of the data center ecosystem. The commitment is to ensure a secure, efficient energy supply based on renewable sources.

OpenAI will act as the main buyer of the center’s capacity, in the role of offtaker.
According to a joint statement, “The Stargate Argentina will position the country as a relevant player in the global digital and energy landscape, promoting economic growth, social benefits, and equitable access to advanced technologies.”
Expansion of OpenAI Technology in the Country
In addition to the physical construction of the data center, the partnership also includes the expansion of OpenAI technology throughout Argentina.
The initiative aims to assist the government, research institutions, and public agencies in using AI-based solutions to optimize processes, reduce costs, and improve the services offered to the population.
The project marks a strategic step as it brings OpenAI closer to an emerging market while also strengthening the local technology ecosystem.
Reasons for Choosing Argentina
Among the decisive factors for choosing the country are tax incentives, energy potential, and a favorable technological environment.
The project will be structured under the RIGI (Regime for Large Scale Investments), which offers competitive tax benefits for large technology ventures.
Another essential point is the renewable energy potential. The Patagonia region, in particular, has strong winds and high solar incidence, along with water resources that allow for clean and stable generation—something crucial for data centers with high electricity consumption.
The competitive electricity cost also played a role in the decision. Industrial rates in Argentina are among the lowest in Latin America, reducing expenses for energy and cooling—the two largest costs in data centers of this scale.
Talent, Connectivity, and Government Support
The presence of local talent and a growing cloud computing market contributed to the choice.
The country is experiencing an increase in the use of digital services by both companies and the public sector. This expands the demand for local infrastructure and decreases latency in connections.
Another differentiator is the connectivity infrastructure, with growing submarine cables and fiber optic networks. This structure improves international data exchange and enhances operational efficiency.
Finally, there is strong government support. Argentina seeks to establish itself as a hub for technology and artificial intelligence.
The Stargate, therefore, symbolizes not only an economic investment but a strategic milestone in the country’s technological repositioning.
