With A Giant Trunk And Sedan Comfort, The Wagon Forgotten By The Rise Of SUVs Offers A Superior Package Of Space And Driveability At An Surprisingly Low Price.

There was a time when wagons dominated the garages of Brazilian families. They were synonymous with space and versatility. However, the arrival of SUVs changed everything, valuing image over functionality. This market shift left behind extremely capable vehicles, now undervalued. Among them, the Renault Megane Grand Tour stands out as the most rational purchase for those seeking a used car.

The Rise Of SUVs And The End Of An Era For Wagons

In the early 2000s, wagons still reigned in Brazil. Models like the Fiat Palio Weekend and Volkswagen Parati had strong sales. The landscape changed in 2003 with the launch of the Ford EcoSport. This model ushered in the era of compact SUVs and initiated a revolution in the market.

The proposition of a higher driving position and an image of robustness seduced consumers. The rise of SUVs was relentless. What was a trend became the dominant force. By 2012, SUVs were already recording double the sales of wagons.

By 2019, compact SUVs represented about 20% of total sales in Brazil. During the same period, the last domestic wagon, the Fiat Weekend, was discontinued. This transition, based more on perception than practice, created a unique opportunity in the used car market.

Advantages That SUVs Cannot Surpass

The main argument in favor of the Megane Grand Tour is its practical superiority. The 520-liter trunk is the big advantage. This volume exceeds that of the vast majority of currently sold compact and mid-size SUVs. The Ford EcoSport, for example, offered only 296 liters. The Renault Duster itself, a spacious SUV, has 400 liters in the 4×4 version.

Comfort is another differentiator. The wagon is 4.50 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.68 meters. This ensures excellent interior space, especially for those traveling in the back seat. Driving benefits from its sedan architecture.

The suspension balances softness and stability, and the electric power steering is light during maneuvers and firm on the road. The Megane Grand Tour delivers the space of a utility with the safe handling of a good sedan, without the sacrifices of a high center of gravity, common in SUVs.

Debunking The Reputation Of “Lemon”

The Megane Grand Tour was offered with two well-known engines. The 1.6 16V Hi-Flex (K4M) powers most units and delivers 115 hp, a performance adequate for the car. The 2.0 16V (F4R) engine, with 138 hp, offers more agility.

This F4R engine is so robust that Renault has used it in more recent models, including in SUVs, such as the Duster and also the Sandero R.S. hatchback. The most controversial point is the four-speed automatic AL4 transmission. It carries a reputation for being problematic, but the central issue is neglect in maintenance.

The transmission requires fluid changes every 40,000 km, a procedure that many owners ignored. Without proper care, the transmission shows failures. This reputation has driven down the price of the car, creating an opportunity for informed buyers. The costs of routine parts, such as brake pads and spark plugs, are reasonable and comparable to other mid-size sedans.

How To Choose The Best Megane Grand Tour

The most recommended version by experts is the Dynamique 1.6 16V with a manual transmission from the years 2012 or 2013. These are the newest models, and the mechanical configuration is the most reliable, avoiding the risk of a poorly maintained automatic transmission. This version already came well-equipped with digital air conditioning, electric steering, cruise control, and rain and light sensors.

Examples in good condition can be found in the range of R$ 27,000 to R$ 35,000. Before closing a deal, a rigorous inspection is vital. Check the electric steering, as repairs can be expensive, costing around R$ 5,000. Test the operation of the key card and look for signs of water infiltration inside. The patient search for a well-kept unit is the key to a good deal.

Megane Grand Tour Vs. Popular SUVs

The direct comparison with SUVs consolidates the thesis of a smart purchase. Against the 2012 Ford EcoSport 1.6, the Megane Grand Tour offers 75% more trunk space, is faster, and more economical on the road, for a lower market price.

The internal rivalry with the Renault Duster is also revealing. Even sharing the 2.0 engine, the wagon has 30% more trunk space, is faster, and more efficient in road consumption. Its lower height ensures a lower center of gravity, resulting in greater stability.

The Duster has an advantage only for those who really need more ground clearance. For most drivers, who drive on asphalt, the engineering of the Megane Grand Tour is simply superior. The market preference for SUVs was a choice of image, not efficiency.
