The European Market Uses Wood Pellets as Inputs for Various Occasions on a Daily Basis, and Therefore, Porto Ponta do Félix Expects Movement of Up to 120 Thousand Tons of Exported Cargo to the Continent’s Ports

The management of Porto Ponta do Félix, located in the state of Paraná, commented on expectations for the export of wood pellets to the European market. As of this Tuesday (04/26), it is expected that there will be a movement of up to 120 thousand tons of cargo in 2022 to the continent’s ports due to the high demand in Europe for this input.

Export of Wood Pellets Could Grow Considerably in 2022, and Porto Ponta do Félix Projects an Export of Up to 120 Thousand Tons of Cargo

The city of Antonina, in the state of Paraná, was the significant choice for operations involving the export of bulk wood pellets, and as a result, the state’s ports will benefit from a movement of cargo not previously seen, with Porto Ponta do Félix being the main highlight for exporting the product to the European market throughout 2022.

Thus, the management of Porto Ponta do Félix expects a total of 120 thousand tons to pass through the port and go through the export process, totaling nine ships by the end of the year. Additionally, this cargo, which was previously exported by containers, is now being shipped using the bulk method, with lower operational costs, making operations even more efficient and beneficial for the port complex, reaching European ports safely and quickly.

The production of wood pellets occurs in the state of Santa Catarina, and following the export process, the cargo will be unloaded at ports in Italy destined for Denmark, where it will be used as input in heating systems, a highly common system in homes and businesses across the European continent. In addition, Porto Ponta do Félix has already been eyeing export operations, with the first occurring back in 2021, involving over 15 thousand tons of cargo being sent to European ports.

Wood Pellets Are Increasingly Demanded in Europe, and the Port Will Expand Infrastructure for Exporting Cargo During 2022

Wood pellets are currently considered strong energy resources, formed from plant biomass residues, such as wood shavings, sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, among various others. Thus, the European continent uses this cargo daily in fireplaces and heating systems, avoiding the recurrent use of petroleum-derived fuels and preventing greater harm to the environment. With the rise of environmental discussions, it is increasingly demanded in the state.

Therefore, Porto Ponta do Félix stated that it will undertake infrastructure works to make the export of wood pellets more efficient and productive, with the goal of expanding the current static capacity from 270 thousand tons to 430 thousand tons by early 2023, making these operations even more significant within the complex.

Finally, the president of Porto Ponta do Félix, Gilberto Birkhan, commented on the relevance of exporting wood pellets and stated that “The wood pellet operation is part of the change of vocation that Porto Ponta do Félix has been undergoing over the past few years. The expansion of the portfolio has allowed us to operate malt, cane and wood pellets, big bags of food, and other bulk products.”
