Port Reaches Unprecedented Milestones in Its 10 Years of Operation
August 2024 was a historic month for Porto Sudeste, in Itaguaí (RJ).
The private port terminal completed 10 years of operation and recorded unprecedented numbers in iron ore handling.
During this period, the port surpassed all its operational records.
-
Brazil extracts 26.3 million tons of ore from what was previously treated as waste, transforming residues into wealth, producing over 3 million tons of sand, and demonstrating how national mining is relearning to generate value.
-
A $3.5 billion megaproject in Latin America pumps desalinated seawater at 1,050 liters per second over 194 km to keep a copper supermine in the Andes operational for another 20 years.
-
A hidden mine in the Andes valued at nearly R$ 1 trillion is starting to attract global attention, containing copper, gold, and silver, and raises an intriguing question: why do Argentina and Chile need to act together to exploit this gigantic wealth?
-
A silent discovery in the interior of Bahia could change the future of energy in Brazil: a uranium reserve in Lagoa Real has an estimated capacity to produce 400 tons per year and is already attracting the attention of energy sector specialists.
The terminal has established itself as one of Brazil’s main logistics hubs.
Record Monthly Volume of Iron Ore
On August 31, Porto Sudeste achieved the largest monthly volume in its history, handling 3.3 million tons of iron ore.
The completion of operations for the vessels Berge Bimberi and KSL Seattle confirmed this milestone.
The Berge Bimberi loaded 203,153 tons.
The KSL Seattle left the Sepetiba Bay with 181,015 tons.
In August 2020, they recorded the previous record of 2.95 million tons.
The current performance exceeded the previous benchmark by more than 350,000 tons.
Daily Unloading Above Any Expectations
Another highlight was the unloading of 12 trains in a single day, also in August 2024.
This achievement totaled over 177,000 tons of iron ore.
The result surpassed the previous record of 10 trains unloaded in a single day.
The previous mark was reached in 2023.
This performance demonstrates the increasing efficiency of the operation.
Moreover, it reinforces the terminal’s logistics capacity to meet the high demand of the Brazilian mineral sector.

Operational Efficiency Highlighted by Management
According to Robson Couto, operations manager at Porto Sudeste, the obtained results demonstrate efficiency, safety, and the team’s commitment.
He highlighted that the numbers celebrate the tenth year of the port’s operation.
According to him, the results represent the company’s capacity to meet the growing market demands.
In addition, he emphasized that the port maintains high standards of safety and sustainability in all operations.
The numbers reinforce the strategic importance of the port for the economy and logistics of the sector.
Strategic Port for Mining and Energy
The Porto Sudeste is located on Ilha da Madeira, in Itaguaí (RJ). Due to its strategic position, it efficiently integrates the national logistics chain.
Since 2015, the terminal has been growing sustainably. Moreover, it maintains a commitment to socio-environmental responsibility, making it a reference in the sector.
The port’s design was conceived to operate various solid bulk commodities. However, iron ore remains its main focus of operation.
Additionally, the terminal can also load liquids. This operational flexibility expands its role in production and export chains.
It is crucial for transporting mining production. At the same time, it plays a vital role in the transshipment of oil and derivatives from the Santos Basin, in the pre-salt area.
Finally, upon completing ten years of operation, Porto Sudeste reaffirms its importance in the economic development of Brazil.
